I'll give them credit for incorporating parking into the structure, rather than using a surface lot or detached garage. Surely theres a way to dress those screens up. Maybe some greenery? Or see what Living Walls can come up with?

Does not look like "blight" to me. I think it will age just fine against other buildings being built today. Of course this is Atlanta, where the sky is always falling.

Not a bad design. Hopefully the street retail extends to all four sides.

Downtown is on fire!

By the way, "blight" is a good think in that it authorizes the government to provide bonds and other tax credits to developers.

Extended hotels provide a needed service. Suppose you are a consultant working for a business downtown and you need a place to stay for a month or two, your not going to rent an apartment for that short amount of time.

Different extended stay hotels target very different demographics. There is the low end type that appeal to the type of people who can't get an apartment for various reasons (really bad credit, long criminal history, don't have a bank account) or don't want to be tied to a place in case they want/need to move on (drifters, low end criminals, part of the cash only society, etc). And then there is the type that caters to business clients. When you're in consulting, you often end up in a city for a couple of months. That's not long enough to bother with moving into an apartment but too long to live out of a hotel room. Associating the two with each other makes as much sense as associating the Ritz Carlton with Motel Six.

That's true, but I think even some some black wrought-iron lattice (similar to what is used all over downtown Savannah) would have looked better.

I doubt the corporate powers at be would ever let living walls have a crack at it.

Frankly, I have never heard of the phrase "upscale extended stay hotel" until today. I'm not in consulting, so that type of thing is not on my radar. I'm glad it'll be a nice place. Hopefully they will keep it nice and it won't be a motel in ten or fifteen years.

The Walton Building downtown is also slated to be turned into an extended stay hotel:
