I'm not a hater, I am a supporter...but I have to say this.

I haven't really watched much soccer in my life. But since professional hockey has now left my life, it seems like soccer will a decent substitute. I watched a game last weekend and it got REALLY exciting at the end. Two goals scored by each team within the last few minutes. Awesome! Then the game ended. Nobody won.

I know soccer fans are tired of hearing it, but that was a huge letdown. I don't know if I can get past that. How can I get so excited about a game if there is a big chance that no one wins that day. Sure, I guess points count towards playoffs or whatever, but it is such a freaking let down.

I'm gonna go to the first game, but I dunno about the rest of it. Whatever the team is called, I will support it. But I'm not sure if I can get emotional invested into a game like that.

Who was playing? It may have been a "friendly" match that did not count towards anything as it was basically just practice.

I am pretty sure MLS (And any significant game in other leagues) does two over time periods and then a shootout until a winner is decided.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Edit: Looks like MLS does do shoot-outs for all matches, but many other leagues only do them if it is a play off game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penalty...ation_football)

Ok, that is good news. I don't remember who was playing, but oddly enough, it was on E!.

I am rather ignorant to the game. But I was under the impression that soccer matches can end in ties.

The MLS Cup last year was very exciting because it went to double shoot-outs before a winner was decided.

MLS games do end in ties (draws) - sorry to ruin the excitement lol

In fact, Portland who are bottom of the western division currently, have managed to draw in 7 of their 11 games this season....they definitely wouldn't be the team to watch if you like an 'final outcome' to your soccer!!!

MLS lets regular season matches end in ties. Extra time and penalty shootouts only happen if the match is part of a knock out tournament, such as the MLS Cup playoffs, or the US Open Cup tournament. (Note that Extra Time is not sudden death - it is a full 30 minutes and multiple goals can be scored.) The regular season shootout was mercifully stopped in the year 2000 or so.

If you follow soccer, individual MLS matches are governed by pretty much the same rules as those used by most every other nation. However, the way MLS determines its champion (playoff tournament) and that MLS does not demote its worst teams to the lower leagues after each season (a.k.a. Relegation) is different from most of the biggest leagues in the rest of the world.

If you ever want more info, keep posting or send me a message. I have been following the league, and the sport, religiously for 15 years.

@ tikigod311

I wouldn't look at a draw as a disappointing outcome from a neutral perspective. Some teams aim for a draw as a strategy against tougher teams and draws can even be exciting. Like you said, there was a lot of action near the end. Each team scored two goals near the end, one almost grasping victory, while the other was able to tie the game and pull 1 point for the draw instead of 0 for the defeat (1 point for drawing, 3 points for a win).

Soccer isn't for everyone, but the more you understand the nuances of the game and pick up the strategy, the more enjoyable it becomes.

And I would say that Baseball and American Football fall into exactly the same category!

Oh for sure, all sports are like this. I'm not a huge hockey fan, but after spending the playoffs a few years ago with my friend up in Pittsbrugh and watching the games with him, I found a new appreciation for it. I was able to figure out why teams do this, or why that player did that, and he could easily explain to me what's going on. It's not that I didn't understand the overall idea of hockey and its rules, but I didn't have an understanding of the nuances.

Soccer I feel is a lot like that. People know soccer from when they played when they were young or they've seen it on TV before, but they really don't understand the nuances of the game so its hard to appreciate why this happens or that happen or why this team did this or why that player did that.

My biggest recommendation to anyone trying to "get into" the sport would be to watch a game with some friends and just pick their brain and ask them to give you some insight. You'll learn a lot in one game alone.
