College Park is much-closer to where you will be working in Newnan, but with crime being a significant concern, College Park is not for the faint-of-heart but is more for urban pioneers who don't mind moving into an area and working extremely-hard to make an area more appealing and liveable for others to move into on a much-larger scale 15-20 years from now.

My little ranch house is surrounded by stately old houses and large McMansions (don't worry, there's not too many of those). The area has some great food, friendly neighbors, and beautiful homes. If you are interested in living somewhere close to Atlanta but still commutable to PTC, College Park is it.
By no means is it "very far off base" to note that crime is a concern in College Park.

It is good that you may not have had any experiences with crime while living in the neighborhood of "Historic College Park", but that most definitely is NOT the experience of everyone who lives (and/or works) in College Park.

I lived in incorporated College Park in a mostly decent area just across the street from the Atlanta Airport Mariott Hotel off of Sullivan Road and have personally been a victim of crime when my front door was kicked-in and my home was burglarized.

The restaurant/pub that was located next to where I lived was also repeatedly broken into and burglarized with the thieves going so far as to break into the place when the College Park Police, who used to stage at the restaurant overnight between runs in an attempt to put a stop to the frequent and repeated break-ins and robberies, were called away on emergency runs.

A close friend of mine who owns his own business was also a victim of crime when his vehicle that he uses for his business was stolen while he was inside of a restaurant in incorporated College Park.

I also worked in unincorporated College Park where a drive-by shooting occurred in a nearby apartment complex where a car full of drug dealers attempted to kill a guy with fully-automatic weapons (high-powered machine guns) but missed and instead hit a gas line causing a major gas leak which lead to the evacuation of the entire apartment complex where the murder attempt occurred and my office.

My boss was also a victim of crime when his pick-up truck was broken into and his gun was stolen while he was inside of his office just a few feet away from his truck.

Make no mistake, there are some positive things going on in College Park, particularly in the historic downtown village area of College Park in which you live.

With its very-close location to the world's busiest airport and a MARTA station, Historic College Park also seems to have a great deal of potential with young professionals over the long-term.

But let's not mislead the OP into thinking that crime and safety is not a concern in College Park when it most clearly is a concern, particularly when the area is very-close to and includes substantial pockets of poverty and some high-crime areas within both incorporated and unincorporated College Park and the nearby areas of East Point, Southwest Atlanta, Hapeville, North Clayton County, etc.

There are some blight spots in College Park and South Fulton County, but there are also some areas of substantial concern in College Park and South Fulton County from a safety standpoint, which is something that the OP needs to know when considering where to make a substantial investment of time and money to live.

Yes, there is crime, like any big city. I know you could say the same things about 04W, Kirkwood, West Midtown, Grant Park, etc. But nobody thinks its a big deal to move to those places. Nobody moving there is considered an urban pioneer. The way you phrased your comments is the way I would describe moving to a place like English Ave, Vine City, etc.

The off base part is that there is a large and well established community of good citizens. They have been there for awhile. Its not like it turned around in the past 2 years or something. I consider the risks or exposure to crime by living in College Park to be comparable, and IMHO less, than living in the some of the most desired areas of Atlanta (for younger folks).

You basically just described the entire Atlanta metro area. My car has been broken into multiple times in west midtown. My neighbor door have been kicked in while she was there. I am always getting notes on my door talking about crime in the community. Crime is just something that is there until it get contained. I think we might need to have the purge. j/k
