Hello All,

I will be starting a new job in Kennesaw come October. I have been in Atlanta for two months, but have lived in the area previously during college. I now live in Sandy Springs off Exit 6/400; my first time ever living OTP. The work schedule will be on your typical 8-5/9-6 schedule. How would the commute be from Sandy Springs to Kennesaw. I'm imagining that I would be going against traffic, at least on 75N. Is there an alternate route besides the 400S-285W-75N route?

Thanks in Advance.

Yes! There are alternate routes to the 400S-285W-75N route between Sandy Springs and Kennesaw.

The simplest alternate route to 400S-285W-75N (the BASE alternative route, if you will) between Sandy Springs and Kennesaw is to go northbound on GA Highway 9 Roswell Road (in the opposite direction of the very-heavy morning rush hour traffic on GA 9 southbound) into Roswell and turn left on GA 120 Marietta Highway westbound;

(...A word of warning: GA 120 Marietta Highway becomes GA 120 Roswell Road after crossing into Cobb County...which is the same name of the GA 9 Roswell Road main drag that runs through Sandy Springs...the existence of two major roads with the name of "Roswell Road" fairly close to each other has been known to cause some confusion so just be aware of this occurrence and know the difference between GA 9 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs and Fulton County and GA 120 Roswell Road in Marietta and East Cobb County)

...After turning left on GA 120 Marietta Highway westbound stay on GA 120 westbound (which becomes GA 120 Roswell Road in Cobb County) for about 7.5 miles until you arrive at the traffic signal for East Piedmont Road;

...Turn right onto East Piedmont Road and stay on the road (which will change names to Piedmont Road and then change names again to Barrett Parkway) until you arrive at the junctions of Interstates 575 and 75 at which time you will be in the Kennesaw area and can go where you need to go from there within the Kennesaw area.

After learning the "BASE Alternative Route" between Sandy Springs and Kennesaw of GA 9 northbound to GA 120 westbound to East Piedmont Road/Piedmont Road/Barrett Parkway (which is an alternative route to 400S-285W-75N that it is highly-recommended you learn), you can deviate from that route onto a route that is even shorter in distance between Sandy Springs and Kennesaw, which is to:

...Take GA 9 northbound from Sandy Springs into Roswell and turn left on westbound GA 120 Marietta Highway;

...After turning left on westbound GA 120 Marietta Highway, go to the first traffic signal at Willeo Road;

...Turn right at the traffic signal onto Willeo Road and go to the end of the road at the traffic signal at Coleman Road;

...Turn left at the traffic signal onto Coleman Road and go to the first traffic signal at Willeo Road;

...Turn right at the traffic signal onto Willeo Road and stay on the road (which will become Post Oak Tritt Road after crossing into Cobb County) for just over 6.5 miles until you arrive at the end of the road at the traffic signal at Sandy Plains Road;

...Depending on where you will be working in the Kennesaw area, you can either:

...Turn right at the traffic signal from Post Oak Tritt Road westbound onto Sandy Plains Road northbound and go to the first traffic signal at Ebenezer Road where you can turn left onto Ebenezer Road and go to the first traffic signal at Blackwell Road where you can turn left onto Blackwell Road westbound (which, of course, will change names to New Chastain Road and then change names again to Chastain Road) and continue on into the Kennesaw area once you cross through the interchange at Interstate 575....

...OR you can turn left at the traffic signal from Post Oak Tritt Road westbound onto Sandy Plains Road southbound and go to the second traffic signal at East Piedmont Road/Piedmont Road and turn right at the traffic signal onto Piedmont Road westbound (which will change names to Barrett Parkway) and continue on into the Kennesaw area after you cross through the interchange at Interstate 575...

Depending on what part of Sandy Springs you are in it may be better to take the interstates or take back roads already mentioned. I-75 you would be doing the reverse commute but I-285 gets very slow in both directions in the afternoons.

The back roads are hit or miss, yesterday 120 looked pretty slow heading east while I was going west on it about 5:30.

Born 2 Roll offers some good alternatives to the interstate. I would add that once in the Kennesaw area, avoid Barrett Parkway and Chastain at the Interstates, use Big Shanty Road, recently opened to get from east to west in the Town Center area. It splits the difference between Chastain and Barrett but goes under both 75 and 575 with no interchange. Designed to get traffic moving between east and west in the Town Center area while avoiding traffic entering/exiting the freeways.

I ride by this portion of 285 daily at 5pm. The OP commute will not get bad until they get on 400. Traffic eastbound on the top end of 285 generally does not start backing up until after 400.

You missed a turn. Gotta turn left off of Johnson Ferry on to Roswell Road (GA 120). Johnson Ferry does not intersect with N. Marietta Pkwy.

Needless to say, just like many people complain that Atlanta is a challenging metro area to get around in without the use of a personal vehicle if one is using transit, Atlanta can also be a very-challenging metro area to get around in with the use of a personal vehicle because of the metro area's extremely-heavy dependence on meandering two-lane roads that may change name and direction several times.

The seemingly complex and confusing network of meandering roads in the Atlanta region is one of the major reasons why many drivers become so overdependent on the freeway system instead of considering alternative routes if possible (alternative routes may not necessarily be a real possibility to use in some parts of the metro area).

The best thing that the OP can do is to obtain a good street atlas that works as a complement to a good GPS system and use both to drive and get familiar with the various surface routes that can (and will) serve as very good alternatives to the freeway system (particularly GA 400 which will be severely-congested during morning and evening rush hours).

Just like Saintmarks recommended, the OP should use Big Shanty Road between Bells Ferry Road and Chastain Road if they have to go west of I-575 and/or I-75 in the Chastain Road area.

There also may be some other variations of the alternative routes described above, but because of the complexity of the meandering surface road network in Metro Atlanta, it might be best if the OP finds out about those other possible route variations by obtaining a really good street atlas and/or a really good GPS and first becoming familiar with the aforementioned surface routes above (mainly because of the potential to confuse the OP with all of the name changes and changes in road direction that occur on other possible route variations).
