Just for people's information, this is not out of the ordinary. The Golden State Warriors did the exact same thing (kept the name, but dropped potentially offensive mascot and imagery)

Someone should ask the Creek Indians how they feel about University of Oklahoma Sooners.

Meh. So many people get butthurt about these things. Keep the name, change the name, whatever. As long as the team itself stays, I don't care either way.

Now how to get the Braves to start performing in the postseason again? THERE'S a controversy that needs some resolution.

If the people that the name refers to are offended, in this case Native Americans and the Washington Redskins, then we can have a discussion about changing it. But from everything I've read, the majority of Native Americans don't have a problem with it.

So with that said, Go Braves and Hail to the Redskins.

I'm a white Christian and I'm not offended by the ND Fightin' Irish, the WF Demon Deacons or the NO Saints.

I don't understand the whole thing because team names are chosen to inspire the team, appear tough to the opponent, and seem cool to the fans. No team chooses a mascot in order to make fun of a group of people. That is crazy. Atlanta Braves--Um, I think we're trying to say, "Hey, we're brave! We're gonna win! We're like the tough Native American guys who lived here first!" Should we erase any mention of Native Americans, any reference to ethnicities? How boring!

Like Wake Forest is saying, "Dudes, we kinda used to be Baptist and we're going to kick your butt--Demon Deacons". Am I offended? No.
