Is it possible to live in Alpharetta and take 9 to Roswell, then 120 to Marietta, and get on Cobb Dr to drive in to Smyrna. My job is off of S. Cobb Dr near 285. Would taking those roads and not taking 400 to 285 be any better in terms of traffic?

That commute is possible as GA 120 between Roswell and Marietta is a good alternative (almost the ONLY alternative) to the severely-congested GA 400 to I-285 westbound.

The kicker is that GA Hwy 9 southbound would itself likely be heavily-congested from Alpharetta south to GA 120 after about 6:30am.

GA 120 westbound between Old Canton Road and the GA 120 Marietta Loop (which itself would also be heavily-congested over to I-75) would also be increasingly very heavily-congested after 6:30am, as would South Cobb Drive southbound down to I-285.

It won't be that hard on your partner either since that will be somewhat of a reverse commute once past the Perimeter/Dunwoody area on 400.

If you're determined to get a somewhat midway point, then Alpharetta, Roswell, or maybe even Woodstock would work but trust me, you're going to come out way worse commute-wise with that deal.

I'd go along with Sandy Springs a bit but it's only like 3 exits up 285 from Smyrna and it's going to be harder to find SFH in your price range.

I think someone should just give one up for the team and move to Smyrna.
...It is not necessarily a bad suggestion that they move to Smyrna or Vinings.

It's just that it would be highly-recommended that they stay off of I-285 eastbound between I-75 and GA 400.

That's because I-285 eastbound between I-75 and GA 400 is one of the absolute worst stretches of roadway in the entire state during morning rush hour to the point that it causes backups, frequent delays and outright total gridlock on many days on I-75 southbound from the I-285 Cobb Cloverleaf interchange all the way back up to the Acworth area near Lake Allatoona starting in the 6am hour.

If they decided to move to the Smyrna/Vinings area, the partner would have to do a reverse commute on I-75 northbound up to GA 120 eastbound over to GA 9 northbound up to Cumming to avoid the absolute mess that is I-285 eastbound between I-75 and GA 400 at that time of morning (from the 6am hour on).

You;'re right and that's a great idea.

120 can sometimes be pretty packed too after you get past 120 loop, but it's not nearly as bad as that stretch of 285 between Paces Ferry, past 75, and on 400 up until almost Northridge. I have taken 75 N to 575 N to cut across Hwy 92 just to avoid the headache when I needed to get north on Roswell Rd/Alpharetta Hwy. "In the morning" would be the operative words here lol as it would not work in the rush hour evening traffic.

Unfortunately, Metro Atlanta is a region with a limited road network in which alternate routes can often be far-and-few in-between during morning and evening rush hours.

GA 120 eastbound through East Cobb between I-75/GA 120 Loop in Marietta and GA 9 in Roswell obviously has traffic during morning rush hour, but GA 120 through East Cobb is much more preferable to I-285 eastbound (between I-75 and GA 400) which is a stretch of roadway that is the cause of much agony and misery in Northwest Metro Atlanta during morning rush hour.

The only routes other than GA 120 eastbound that the OP's partner could utilize between the Smyrna/Vinings area and Cumming is:

...Powers Ferry Road/Terrell Mill Road northbound, to Lower Roswell Road/Willeo Road eastbound, to GA 120 eastbound, to GA 9 northbound, to Norcross Street eastbound, to Grimes Bridge Road/Old Roswell Road/Westside Parkway/Morrison Parkway/Westside Parkway northbound, to GA 120 Old Milton Parkway eastbound, to GA 400 northbound to Cumming.

I would recommend I-75 northbound, to Canton Road northbound, to Sandy Plains Road eastbound, to GA 92 eastbound, to Hardscrabble Road eastbound, to Rucker Road/GA 120 Old Milton Parkway eastbound, to GA 400 northbound to Cumming, but I am concerned that the OP could encounter some morning rush hour delays (back-ups) on the mostly 2-lane section of Rucker Road/GA 120 Old Milton Road between GA 140 Houze Road and GA 9 and Haynes Bridge Road.
