Can anyone suggest some large Atlanta-area used car dealers or new dealers with a big selection of used cars that is NOT CarMax? I had a bad experience with them so I don't want to give them my business. I'm also not interested in buy-here-pay-here lots.

I tried buying from private sellers and that's been a disaster thus far. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

I'd use Auto-Trader.com and find what you want.

What is it you are looking for?

I'd also sign up for a month of Carfax. Check the history of anything you like before even going to the dealer.

I'm not settled on any particular make or model. Just trying to find a dependable car within a certain budget. Trying to spend less than $10k. I know that's pushing it though.

I don't want to spend a lot on a car since I plan to move back to Chicago and most likely won't have a use for it; will mostly likely get rid of it once I get back there. But I need something while I'm still in Atlanta.

Curious ... what was your "bad experience" with Carmax? I've bought my last three cars with them and had no complaints, until the most recent experience. I still recommend them, though.

One of our kids has used a place in Lilburn. I don't really know anything about them other than that.

They refused to sell me a car. Wouldn't even let me onto the lot to look at the cars. For whatever reason when they saw me, I guess they figured I couldn't afford a car. Told me unless I had A-1 credit AND 40% down, I wouldn't be allowed on the lot, then they turned me away. They didn't run my credit or anything.
