I recently moved to Georgia and bought a condo in Buckhead. I love it here, generally speaking, and I love my immediate area in Buckhead even moreso. I've also been doing the touristy spots with friends and family in town visiting which has also been great.

My office is about 20-25 miles north of Buckhead and yes traffic can be bad, but my drive to and from is never more than 40-45 minutes, and can be as quick as 30. It's an afterthought.

Anyways, all of that said, as I read through this forum to try and learn more about my new city and state I've quickly picked up on pretty consistent negativity about the city from the community on this board. Obviously a good portion of it is inherent to ANY message board but I'm starting to wonder if I'm the one missing something.

I find people down here to be incredibly pleasant and most importantly happy, which is something that was missing in the midwest city i moved here from.

I guess the point of this long-winded post is to just ask whether I really am missing something. Truth be told I was excited to tell people I was moving to Atlanta because, in my mind, it's a COOL city that has a level of 'sexiness' to it that most cities don't.

So: is it just a message board thing or is general consensus that people actually don't like being here?

You're not missing anything and there's nothing wrong with you! Atlanta is indeed a sexy, exciting city and a happy place to live.

Don't believe everything you read on C-D!

Yes, you're in the absolute best part of Atlanta. If you get outside into places like Dekalb, Gwinnett, Cobb, you'll quickly see the problems. You have a reverse commute, so you don't really see the intense traffic that the rest of us must deal with. Midtown-Buckhead-Perimeter-GA-400+ is the absolute best core in Atlanta, it's a long, narrow band and you seem to be right in the bullseye.

Thanks both for the responses. As a side note I've previously lived in some rougher places (for example, Baltimore) and thus the 'outside' Atlanta places are already familiar territory and don't bother me. I'm excited to be here and appreciate the feedback.

Understand that many people on city- data often don't have lives or have very crappy ones so they come on here to blow off steam and blame Atlanta for their personal problems.

Most normal people living here don't hate it and find things they enjoy obviously, or there would be mass exodus.

Realize that on city-data urbanity/walkability etc trumps all possible aspects and offerings of a city.

Most people in real life are adaptable and don't let it ruin their non lives to come on city-data to spew vitirol.

ATL is a great city, the people who talk bad about this city, most likely aren't happy with their lives. Not saying there are a few with e legitimate cons.

People complain about things when what they have doesn't match what they think they should have.

If you came here and bought a condo in Buckhead and commute to a job up north, I can guess a couple of things.....

1) You make a comfortable living and money is more or less not a problem
2) You're a decently intelligent person who was smart enough to find a good neighborhood to buy in

Those are two things that make being happy a lot easier right off the bat.
