Here, I'm a Kroger man! The layout is the same regardless of location. I can get in and get out. My wife prefers Publix. Their customer service is top notch. And the freshly prepared Avocado rolls are damn good!
The Harris-Teeter here on St Simons is fabulous, particularly the wine department. My cousin and I actually looked into opening a wine shop on the island but decided that H-T offered too much competition. The man that runs the wine section is wonderful.

Down in Fayetteville, there's an old Ingles store on the southside of town that's been there since before anything else and hasn't been updated in years. Across the street is a one of the cleanest, fanciest Publix stores I've ever seen, and one of those Krogers that are so big you have to leave a trail of bread crumbs to find your way back to the front. You know the kind: Sushi bar. Olive bar. Wine bar. Coffee bar. Employees all speaking languages you don't understand wearing chef hats mixing up all kinds of delicacies to sample and buy. It's ridiculous.

But that Ingles? Better deli. Better meats. Better bakery. Better prices. Better service. It's like an old-fashioned mom-and-pop grocery store from the good ol' days. And whenever I'm home visiting family, it's where we shop.

Now, the Ingles near my sister up in White County is like Harris Teeter. But I wouldn't trade our Ingles for that. I like it just the way it is!

BTW ... ADM was the subject of that really funny, bizarre movie starring Matt Damon ... "The Informant" ... they aren't exactly the MOST ETHICAL corporation around.

You understand my regard for a good grocery store. Take Cub Foods. Their bakery was first rate. If they didn't have what I came in for, fresh apple fritters, they would make a batch for ME! Then there's Schnucks, a St. Louis chain. A wonderful grocery store. The seafood department was top-tier! The woman that ran it was the best. Schnucks used to have several locations in Memphis. Unfortunately, Kroger bought them all out. They still have Easy Way. You can't miss these orange colored grocery stores that are all over. Caramel cakes and chess pies!

I was born in Ingalls Memorial in suburban Harvey. It's pronounced the same.

I guess that this store is NOT the Ingles Market on Hugh Howell? I've never been there; I googled it.

Enjoy it while you can. Typically Ingles stores do not survive in the situation you described.
