I have recently been laid off and I thought of this as an opportunity to get into a field that I have always had interest in. I found on the emory website a certificate program for web site design or development. Now it is a hefty penny of 5000 dollars and I am not trying to just throw my money away. So if anyone has either gone through or is going through the program, could you please give me some insight as to if it is a good program. Does the certificate mean anything? Can you actually get a job with the skills earned? And is it worth every penny?

Thank you very much.

I don't know a thing about the Emory web design/development certificate program, but an acquaintance of mine went through the Emory paralegal program and reports it was a complete waste of time and money (and she did not get a job either).

So, find out more before you use up your savings.

Hey thanks, I am trying to find out more but unless it is on emory's website there does not seem to be too many people on the internet who knows about this. I am asking everywhere. I thought that this would be a good spot but I only got one reply. Do you have any suggestions as to where I could find out more?

Clark Howard recommends, that before proceeding with any program like this in any field, that you speak to the people who do the hiring. So, identify the firms that you might one day like to work for and see if you can find a human resources person who might guide you about what types of credentials that they look for when they hire.

Make sure you make it clear that you aren't currently looking for a job, that will help get you in the door to speak to someone. That you are considering this as a career change and are looking for advice on how to break into the field.

I think five thousand dollars sounds high.

I think Emory's reputation would help more than the Certificate. I'd look through a few Web Developer job ads and see what the minimum requirements are for those positions. You may be better off getting an Associates Degree even if it's at another school like say DeVry.

You will get web jobs with your portfolio. There is nothing wrong with schooling, but if you are computer savvy, then you won't need to pay tuition to learn web authoring skills.

There are plenty of online resources for learning everything from creating a simple web page to complicated javscript. (Like w3 schools)

Then there are the O'Reilly books, which are an excellent resource.
