Yes, Atlanta does have history, particularly in relation to events surrounding the Civil War (in the 1860's) and the Civil Rights movement of the late 1950's and early-mid 1960's.

One major reason that it may seem like "Atlanta has no history" to some is because of the large number of residents transplanted from Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic cities and states where the history of European settlement dates back to the early 17th Century and where many historical structures still stand in highly-populated and heavily-developed metropolitan areas (in states from Massachusetts down to Virginia).

Unfortunately, we likely have bulldozed too many historic places, not necessarily because of an eagerness to build the "New South", but most-likely because of Atlanta's very-powerful and overly-aggressive land speculation and real estate development community.

Atlanta has always redeveloped in the very newest styles and fashions of each era, definitely wanting to forget it's wretched past and move on to a bright and successful future. As soon as Chicago started building the first few skyscrapers, Atlanta and many other cities were right there to start building skyscrapers of their own. Yes, we have torn down many, moving on to more modern styles, but click here to see some of the buildings that Atlanta has saved and the historic districts in downtown Atlanta:

I believe to say that our past is 'wretched' is arguable.

Not sure I get the "wretched past" part. Of course there have been less-than-spectacular events that have happened, such as the torching of the city by Gen. Sherman and the Sweet Auburn riots, but Atlanta didn't have a slave-based economy, never experienced a major natural disaster, etc. Atlanta began as a business venture and still operates in that same vein to this day.

In terms of preservation, Atlanta hasn't been the best at it but it hasn't been the worst either. The city's major fault here is the underutilization of historic structures in the urban core.

I think that your original premise is pretty much a fallacy, especially if you are going with the idea that perhaps a LOT of people think that Atlanta has no history. The reality is quite the contrary imho.

Sorry people #4,5,6,7:

I was talking about Atlanta rebuilding after the fires and politics of the Civil War, regrouping after race riots and O4W fire, and restarting ideologically after the Civil Rights movement. Atlanta, as any important large city, has multitudes of history.

Sorry if I threw you guys with the "wretched past" comment, but it did sell slaves, have to rise like a phoenix. A phoenix does not rise from perfection.

i think the problem is that atlanta's boom period didn't come until the 80s. until then, we were kind of a "big southern town" with more regional importance than national importance. we had a historic town for a metro of about 1 million people. now we've got a metro of 6 million and it seems like there isn't enough history for a metro of this size. we did make some huge errors in downtown, especially, between the 50s and the 80s when people decided parking was more important than our city. but even if those buildings had remained, i think it would still be a common complaint that atlanta has 'no history'.

I still strongly believe that that is a fallacy & that it's not a common complaint. I don't see that a LOT of people believe the op's original premise is true.
I do however see that people believe that Atlanta has TORN DOWN a lot of it's past but that is an entirely different idea than just saying that it doesn't have much history.
