Indeed, and it makes you wonder if any serious consideration was EVER given to doing something mixed-use with the stadium site in the first place? Before the Braves announcement? I'm convinced that the Braves wouldn't have been happy with anything there. They wanted a stadium that they could own and keep all rights to. Nothing could have kept them happy at the Turner Field site, but they most certainly should have considered alternative sites in the city. The first offer that came along, they took it. And that seems cheap to me.

I was completely opposed to the new Falcons stadium in the early goings, but now I think it's going to be a fantastic venue that the city can really be proud of. It's a shame the Braves and the city couldn't have created something equally exciting. It's an enormous missed opportunity.

It's odd that the braves haven't broken ground on a stadium that's slated to open in January 2017, while the Falcons' construction crews have been digging for weeks. If they get off schedule, this could get interesting...

Braves could linger at Turner Field into 2017

Reed: Braves could extend lease, but must be 5 years (Atlanta Business Chronicle)

Uh, the traffic relief plan consists of adding an additional street off of Windy Ridge Blvd? Good luck with that.
Windy Ridge is a traffic nightmare...and adding an additional street won't help...

I believe the Georgia Dome took just shy of 3 yrs (from ground breaking to opening). I'm guessing a retractable dome in downtown w/ twice the capacity of the new Braves stadium is probably going to take more time than mowing down some trees in Cobb. It looks like Turner Field took 3yrs of initial construction as well so they're still within range. Of course one minor construction challenge and they're going to burn all the schedule slack.

I have to imagine building out that pipeline alone could take a good bit of their schedule from now until Feb.

To think, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was built in a year. They don't make 'em like they used to!
