According to the ajc.com (No more 404, 678 area codes given in Atlanta | www.ajc.com), no more 404 or 678 area codes will be given out in metro Atlanta. You will have to settle for 470. 706 in North, Eastern and South Western GA will no longer receive 706 area code; they will have to settle for 762 in those areas. The limits have been reached for these assigned area codes.

Metro Atlanta now has FOUR area codes: 404, 470, 678 and 770.

This is very interesting news considering 404 was the primary area code just under 20 years ago. 770 was added as the areas second area code in 1995 (Area code 770 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

More numbers, just as my memory has headed down a dirt road.

I wonder if we have the market cornered on most area codes? Anyone know? I'd guess California, for its sheer size and population, has more than Georgia. But, goodness sakes. For our size and pop, we've gotta be close to the top. My dear old mom used to be one area code away (404 to 912), now, I'm afraid, I've lost her!

Yeah, California has a ton.

But then think of this: when you rank the states by order in largest to smallest by area, Georgia comes in at 21 (according to the World Atlas), and New Jersey at 46. And they both have nine area codes. (And when I was a kid in Jersey, we only had two...things change!)

Uh ... AREA code has nothing to do with AREA ... it has to do with population and the amount of phone numbers in use within a certain geography.

Montana, the 4th-largest state in the country, only has one. Ditto North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

It used to be that 404 covered the widest local calling area in the country for a metropolitan area code. Being able to call someone almost 50-60 miles away (north fulton/Forsyth) to south as far as Fairburn and perhaps beyond as a local call was almost unheard of, except in Atlanta. Atlanta was pretty spoiled :-)
