hmmm This is interesting. I could not find out anything for future redistricting plans of Walton. Are these speculations?

As of now, yes. However, if you're really set on Walton, try moving as close as possible. Though if you were to be redistricted into say, the Pope or Lassiter districts, it wouldn't be a bad thing since they're pretty much close to being on par with Walton academically.

There are no "official" plans to redistrict. Just speculation.

But the "speculation" comes up a lot...a lot--because Walton is over-crowded/over-capacity, and two nearby schools are under-capacity (and this was not always the case). The proposed solution now, like Gulch mention, is more than likely to just expand capacity at Walton--since redistricting is such a political hot-potato.

It was a hot-mess/war just a few years ago when they had to redistrict some areas from Dickerson to Dodgen (They did redistrict by the way).
And this did not even involve a change of high schools--only the middle schools...and two similar middle schools. Imagine if it was high schools...

The whining over the Dickerson/Dodgen redistricting (mostly from East Hampton parents) was so stupid, and I'm glad the district made that move.

It was nice going to a very under-capacity* Dodgen (we only had about 725 students in all three grades then) back in the late 90s though!

*This was before Dodgen expanded its physical plant.

Yes. Good advice about closeness, Gulch.

It is pften said that you are moving into a school district (meaning Cobb County Schools), not just a school zone (lastminutemom states this a lot).

If you are dead set on a school, you need to make sure you are right next to the school. Otherwise, make sure you are happy with the other nearby schools.

And for the record, Sprayberry and Wheeler are good schools...they are just not seen in the same light as Walton/Pope/Lassiter since their populations are more middle-class (with upper-middle class and lower-middle class as well). The demographic/economic diversity is reflected in the test scores.

The whining was stupid. And the main part of East Hampton really shouldn't be attending Mount Bethel as well.

Yes, in 1993, the opening of Hightower Trail cut deep into Dodgen's zone. Dodgen became very small for like a decade. The same thing happened to Simpson Middle when Hightower Trail opened.

And--so that you know...the opening of Hightower Trail was also a political hot-potato (and my neighborhood, unfortunately, was one of the screamers). The politics involved is one reason why Simpson became very much under-capacity for a long time.

Pre mid-90s, redistricting was basically a non-issue in a lot of areas. People became more-obsessive about school lines as time went on (for various reasons--could be another thread).

Pope and Sprayberry. Perhaps Wheeler as well since it's being expanded.

And a lot of this doesn't take into consideration the relative "new" building that is going on in East Cobb. For a great part of the 90's and early 2000's, there wasn't much building going on...but that has changed. As the older, original folks from the 60's and 70's are dying off (with their 1,100 sf ranch house on 3 acres), the developers are coming in and building even more McMansions and the county commission is quite happy with rezoning these parcels into RA5 lots (postage stamp size lots).

If you can "lower" yourself to a meager 2,000 sf home with a 2 car garage that was built in the 70's (and probably built better than the McMansions of today) then you can get into the Walton area for WAY less than 300K. And people wonder why they have to work to the ripe old age of 92...
How much less than 300K can you go ?
I searched georgia mls for a 4B/2B 2000+ sq.ft with no basement thats zoned for Walton HS and I got..... 4 homes.
I do not want a McMansion, lol.... I am coming from NY, and what I see here is a major size upgrade, believe me !!
Maybe I am not searching right, where are you seeing the homes for WAY less then 300k ?
