With the exception of Midtown, I would say they were the city's best 'up and comers'. My favorites?
Ansley Park
Brookwood Hills
Druid Hills
Morningside
Virginia-Highland

You said "were", as in PAST tense?

For the most part yes. I'm moving to the O4W next year. After BA development is complete next year in Buckhead I would have added Buckhead. O4W is my favorite neighborhood. I like it because Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market is going to open in the O4W next year. I like running and it is near the Eastside and the Freedom Trail. I'd rather run on a trail verses near the streets. It is not that far from Midtown. Walking distance away from Piedmont Park. My favorite Atlanta underground club called "MJQ" is walking distance away. Inman Park is nearby which is live almost every night. Clermont Lounge isn't that far away. The nice O4W Park is nice. Etc.

I agree with LovingDecatur, they are great up and coming neighborhoods

I would never recommend newbies to Atlanta to live in the suburbs unless they have family and kids or unless they are coming from an expensive city and they want a big house. You do not get to experience the real Atlanta in the suburbs. Its kind of like moving to NY to experience Manhattan but living in Long Island. I think you visited the O4W when you were at the Streets Alive event. It might look a little rough on the outside but once you get to know the area you will love it
