I'm relocating to somewhere in or around Midtown. I have not committed yet because I'm still in “leaving no stone unturned” mode.

OK, so I have been looking at a few highrises and mid-rises for rent; I define these as properties with elevators and a parking garage. It seems I'm picking up a pattern of complaints about bugs mostly in older buildings, but significant enough that it has made me take notice. This would be my first time living in a highrise/mid-rise and while I'm gung-ho in concept, I realize I don't really know smack about the typical concerns.

I anticipated that being hemmed up so closely with your neighbors could aggravate some folks when it comes to noise and smells. That could happen anywhere though, and I'm somewhat laid back so those two things would not be an issue for me in most cases.

To make a long story short (too late lol), what are the common cons of living in this type of property?

The only bugs I've seen in my place likely flew in via the balcony (I'm on the 17th floor).
The biggest thing I had to adjust to was the distance between my car and the front door.
It's most inconvenient when combined with full bladder. Whenever I run into the lobby and announce, "David, I'm dancing here", he knows to jump up and unlock the bathroom door.

That is too funny! Similarly, my main pet peeve about high-rise living was how long it took me to go back to my place when I realized I'd forgotten something. . . I didn't have bug problems in ATL but did when I lived in NY and their was a restaurant on first floor of the building. . .gross.

Oh Gerry, say it ain't so.

I was being vague, but I really can't deal with them. We all have our issues and that is one of mine. I have heard people say that well if you live in GA blah, blah, blah, but it's not true or perhaps I have been fortunate. That doesn't mean that I have not had an occasional one, but I whipped out the wasp and hornet spray (don't ask, just know it's quite effecive indoors) and killed it from across the room. But if they are going to be a regular feature, that's a no go.

I think bugs are less of a problem in high-rises as a whole. But they can still happen. I was in a newer high-rise and never saw one, but have had bad bug problems in older low-rise apartments.

I'd be more concerned with the stomping and jumping of the neighbor above me rather than the bugs, especially in an older building.
