The annual APD crime report is in:

http://www.atlantapd.org/pdf/crime-d...4CC0946162.pdf

81 murders in 2013, down from 83 in 2012 and 86 in 2011. In the modern era only 2009 was lower, with 80. That's a murder rate of 18.3/100,000 people.

Rape and robbery show uneven trends in the last few years--robbery is up from last year but below 2009 rates.

Burglary is down dramatically from 2009, while other forms of theft are generally down but less significantly.

That sure is good news. For the most part the city of Atlanta is very safe.

While good that murders were down for the year, it's unfortunate that less violent crimes were up, such as robbery (up 6% compared to 2012 and 5% from 2011). That doesn't really surprise me though, considering the big increase in crime in desirable east side neighborhoods over the summer. It's good to see overall trends in crime going down, but this city really needs to up its game on getting robberies and other petty crimes down.

Great! If they would tear down a few more low income housing complexes those numbers would drop even lower

It's great that Atlanta is moving in the right direction along with most of the other big cities in the US. LA is down, Philly, DC. NYC posted only 333 murders in 2013, and for a city of almost 9M people that's amazing. Back in 1990 NYC posted almost 2400 murders, what a great turnaround.

Ii wonder if the murder rate in the metro area stayed the same or went down, that's what really counts. It is trickery. I'm sure since they relocated low-income, crime infested residents to the outskirts, the outskirts that border the city have seen a rise in the murder rate. This wouldn't be counted in the stat you listed above.

Crime has been going down in the cities and going up in the suburbs nation wide. But I think the trend it still a decrease on the whole.

Gwinnett County had 27 or 28 homicides for the year.

50 in 2007 and 41 in 2012.

I am okay with relocating folks to the suburbs if that's what it takes to keep crime low in the city.

The suburbs have plenty of money and space, and in due course they will find a way to work things out. In the interim, we all have a stake in keeping the central city safe.

Great news. APD just needs to add more bike patrols to problem areas that require officers to get out their cars.
