Some of the most-popular locations for family picnics in and around the Atlanta area are:

> Lake Lanier (at various picnic spots at the dozens of parks in and around the Lake Lanier area)

> Red Top Mountain State Park at Lake Allatoona

> Stone Mountain Park

> Sweetwater Creek State Park

To further help you with ideas on picnic locations for your family reunion, here is a link to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources State Parks and Historic Sites page:

You can also go to county government websites where you will find links to county parks if there are particular counties where you would like to stage a family reunion picnic.

It would help if you posted what areas you are interested in ( such as on the Northside , Eastside, Westside, Southside) and how far you are willing to travel .

and how many people you are expecting, what amenities you need (covered area, barbecue grills, bathrooms, hotels nearby), what time of year.

I agree with this, also with the time of year along with what you are willing to pay.

We planned a family reunion that included a picnic a few years ago but felt some options were too expensive (Stone Mountain in particular). We chose a cheaper option and it turned out great but there are many places in metro Atlanta that can fit a picnic destination. It would be better to know if you are just doing a simple picnic (BBQ, playground, music just for the family) or if you want an area with a lot of other amenities and available activities for the family.

We usually went to Grant park or Perkerson park when I was growing up. Both are very nice. Stone mountain is a good suggestion, too.

We are staying in a downtown hotel during August 2014. We want to try to have a location where there are activities for kids and a place where older relatives do not have to sit outside in the heat all day. We plan on taking a tour of Atlanta in the morning followed by the picnic location. I expect at least 50 persons from all over the country.

How much is your budget?

FWIW, we actually used Washington Park in the city of Atlanta for our picnic. It has outdoor bathrooms and a natatorium (older relatives went swimming) and a couple playgrounds and the pavilion rental at the time was only $300 and we wanted a cheaper picnic because we went all out for other events and rented 15 passenger vans to carry our folks around (there were about 150 of us). We checked out Stone Mountain and the same size pavillion was about $2K and this was 3 years ago. Though our family wouldn't mind paying extra, we didn't want to pay as much for a picnic when it wasn't the highlight of our events. But if it is your highlights, you may want to go big and go to Stone Mountain since they have a lot of indoor areas on the site.

Perkerson Park is nice too. But if you want indoor, air conditioned facilities, you will have to pay more.

Another suggestion is just to utilize the hotel's conference rooms and do a banquet. Downtown is near Centennial Park and the kids can go out there in August and get in the fountain and have a good time and it is centrally located near a lot of tourist attractions. It may be a better option than an outdoor picnic to have a banquet indoors then go outside and enjoy Centennial Park as needed if the hotel is near there. Our family stayed at Embassy Suites right next door to Centennial and they had a great time.

We had a banquet there as well and it went great.
