There was a ton of haters when NYC first touted and launched the scheme (as there were in London and probably every city in which a similar scheme has launched).....those people were soon in the minority when Manhattan was awash with people on 2 wheels.

I'll find and post an article that was written a few months on that was from a previous skeptic to the scheme who had been completely won over.

Right now what Atlanta needs (more than ever) is transport alternatives, if the bike scheme even removed a couple of hundred of daily car journeys from the city that would be a good thing.

Looks like we'll be two-wheeling it soon.

The centerpiece of Atlanta’s plan to start its first bike-share program is slated to be approved Monday by the Atlanta City Council. Bikes are to be rolling within a year.

The plan is for a private vendor to provide at least 500 rental bikes for use during a five-year contract. The two start-up areas are in Buckhead and Midtown/Downtown Atlanta, according to the legislation. Rental prices have not been released.

A SoBi bike comes equiped with fenders, front basket capable of handling a 20-pound payload, step-over frame, and adjustable, non-removable seat to accommodate riders ranging in height from 4 feet, 11 inches to 6 feet, 6 inches. Credit: socialbicycles.com

Nice! I have used Chicago's bike share and the kiosks had issues. This systems sounds much better.

They are in Houston, and Houston's streets aren't exactly bike-friendly. So don't expect a shift to a biking Atlanta.

I don't know. I see a fair amount of people biking in the city proper. And they are building out a lot of bike paths. As of 2010 Atlanta was closing in on Chicago on the % of bike commuters: Good news: Bike commuting in Atlanta rose 111 percent | Atlanta News & Opinion Blog | Fresh Loaf | Creative Loafing Atlanta

There are a lot more bike commuters intown than you would think. Cyclist can form bike-trains for safer rides.

Nah, it's just NYC. As negative as Atlantans can be about progress, New Yorkers take it to a whole new level.

Not exactly an apples an oranges comparison. Here at least, one could board a train in say Sandy Springs or College Park or Buckhead and ride to their job in Midtown or Downtown, then take a rented bike the rest of the way to their office. Or rent a bike on the Beltline in O4W and cycle to the Highlands for lunch. We're a gazillion times better suited for the use of this on a daily basis than Houston would be, where I imagine the bike share there is mostly just a occasional curiosity.

Glad to see they are going with SoBi bikes. I like that system.

This is going to add a significant value to commuters and visitors alike. I hope it works well and people understand that it is that last mile connection that make getting out of your car possible.

I participated in one of those "bike-to-work" days, and our "train" had a grand total of 3, including myself.
