Any areas along the north, northeast, west, and east lines.

rent in a decent area goes as follows (in my experience)

"decent area" - 750-900
decent area - 900-1200
nice area - 1200-1600
NICE area - 1600-2400

I'm thinking of areas around transit. Decent is very relative, so by no means is my explanation scientific.

Most of the East line is good to live off of and varies in price. That's more single family suburban style living. But lofts and apartments sprinkled throughout.

The stations b/t Midtown and Lindbergh will have more multifamily housing (apartments/condos). Areas around the Dunwoody and Sandy Springs stations contain a lot of apartments.

Less familiar with the NE line, but I believe it is predominately single family homes.

I wouldn't bother with the west line, someone else may rightfully disagree.

South line, just college park and parts of east point are decent.

Just one person's opinion.

You will probably want to be close to a subway station. Just look at the MARTA map.
There are a lot of options, it depends on your budget, if/where you will work/study, and what you mean by "decent" area. For example, Midtown and Decatur are two good choices, but are more expensive. Downtown actually has the best transit access. A place near West End or King Memorial stations might be cheap and have good transit, but higher crime. Something like Chamblee has some cheap-ish apartments right by the station, but is farther out from the city.

we have a subway system, but if you want to be able to walk to the stations, you'd probably want to check out the station you're locating near first. some of them, especially ones that are further out, like north springs, etc. have large parking lots/decks and are surrounded by highways, so they aren't very walkable.

Midtown would be the best bet for this but would be $1000 plus a month for an apartment. The east side over around Decatur could be good as well and so can parts of Buckhead and Sandy Springs/Dunwoody.

Decatur would probably be ok, though you would be advised to check MARTA's schedules to be sure you live on a bus route that has the frequency you want. MARTA > Schedules & Maps > Bus Routes & Schedules

Lindbergh and Buckhead would also be ok, but pretty expensive and again, check the bus routes. Outside of those three places, I can't think of any decent place in the area that's right on top of a train station and has ok neighborhood bus service.

Atlanta has the best subway system in the real south (not including DC) and it is ranked #7 in the USA

What type of area are you looking for?
