It has a charming downtown that is just a few blocks set up on a traditional square with a courthouse.

It is actually the oldest town in the metro area and is older than Decatur, Atlanta, and Marietta.

It was just never very big. There is a small non-profit professional theater, called the Aurora Theater.

I wouldn't say anything there is trendy or catered directly towards young professionals, like you might find in Midtown Atlanta.

There is a small park next to the downtown that is nice called Rhodes Jones Park. It is very nice, but not trendy or anything.

Right outside the city are bigger forms of entertainment.

Go north on GA 20 is Coolray Park with the Gwinnett Braves minor league baseball team.

Go west and you have the Gwinnett Arena with the Gwinnett Gladiators minor league hockey and a decent amount of concerts.

If you want a larger park for taking a small hike you can go to Tribble Mill of Harbins Parks to the southeast.

There are nicer, newer suburban style dining amenities along Sugarloaf pkwy or Lawrenceville-Suwannee Rd.

The City itself is more of a suburban bedroom community, but anchored with a job base from the Gwinnett County Government.

The best shopping in the area will be a drive north on GA 20 to the Mall of Georgia. It is actually one of Atlanta's larger and nicer shopping malls.

According to the Wikipedia page on Lawrenceville, it is the second oldest town in metro Atlanta. It's not exactly small with a population of 30,000.

The downtown is what I was talking about. It is pretty small.

It has lots of suburban style neighborhoods and strip malls around it that make the population bigger, but the downtown center is small and mostly situated around a single square. There are some law offices and government offices a few blocks away from the downtown. Many of the law offices are operating out of old houses.

As far as it being the second oldest... and citing 'wikipedia.'

Find me a town that is older in metro Atlanta

Well, I actually like Sugarloaf Mills.

Sure, it doesn't have the high-end shopping options of other malls, but it does have a lot of unique aspects like a Dave & Busters in the mall and joints where you can shoot pellets out of air guns at each other, play glow in the dark mini golf, race slot cars, and an indoor skate park.
