You can't blame the base for the reality that proper zoning for residential development was practically non-existent back then(and now).

This NIMBY nonsense is out of control. It's just like moving next to a garbage dump and then complaining that the garbage dump is there.

What is with people here?
Are you seriously trying to say that the county should have left the surrounding area as it was in the 1940s? As stated, there's actually minimal residential growth adjacent to Dobbins, so I think there was pretty decent control.

Did Dekalb County do a better job around PDK?

There are plenty of similar situations in other cities where WWII bases and adjacent factories brought workers and development that today has grown well past the base.

True to some degree, but the fact that something was there in some form does not justify any/all use or abuse.

What "abuse?" You move next to an Air Force base and are shocked that planes fly overhead?

In this age where everyone is a victim and every political leader purposely made decisions to make your life worse, common sense arguments aren't heard. I'm totally with you, but somebody always gets their panties in a wad over common sense solutions it seems.

They should just stick them out in the middle of nowhere so cities and towns won't have to go thru this agony of worry and wait to see whether they will get slammed. They might bring a great deal of economic prosperity for a while but the constant worry over the closure of them would worry me into the loony bin. If I were a civic leader, a military base would be the LAST thing I would try to land in my area. It's not worth the constant worry and strife. These are of course my opinions and nothing more.
I don't think anyone believes that Cobb will not suffer if Dobbins closes. But the area will rebound much more easily with Dobbins closing than Warner Robins would if Robins AFB closed or Valdosta if Moody AFB closed.

These places do not exist in a vacuum. If they were built in the middle of nowhere, the support community that comes in to help run the place follows. Warner Robins is a prime example, the place didn't even exist until Robins AFB came into being. Now one of the more prosperous areas outside the Atlanta area.

One important point that I feel needs to be made is that Dobbins is NOT the same as what was proposed in Gwinnett County at Briscoe Field.

At Gwinnett, you have an airport that is used primarily by general aviation. Air traffic there is mostly private prop aircraft and small business jets.

At Dobbins, you've had multi-engine cargo and tanker jets using the field for decades. A C-5 is bigger than a 747. Add the F-22, F-18, and other fighter jets, and the air traffic at Dobbins has been in a different class from Gwinnett or even PDK.

One plane flying overhead occasionally is a far cry from planes flying in and out multiple times per day. I live not far from a Hospital which has the occasional helicopter. Are they noisy? Sure. When they fly overhead while still ascending or starting their descent, do they drown out the TV and people in the house talking? Yep. But I may go days or weeks without that so it's not a problem. But I WOULD have a problem if the Hospital decided to become a full-time heliport and I had 10 or more helicopters flying overhead causing disruption every single day. But if there were already 10 or more helicopters flying in or out each day and they wanted to increase to 20 or more, that's when I really don't have much to complain about.

That is such a simplistic easy response. Yes, from several miles away we were used to the occasional flights in/out of Dobbins, and even the jets on alternate weekends. But then when two jets flew so low we thought our ear-drums were going to break and the jets were going to come through our ceiling - - the AFB gave us the same type of response: "We were here before you" - - so we can do whatever we want.... That is abuse.

There is not a need for another commercial airport in metro Atlanta. The best thing that could happen is for ATL to expand its number of gates to accommodate more aircraft at one time.
