I just moved (back) here from Ohio, been here for a month now. I thought I lived in Austell because that's what my address say. But one night a couple weeks ago some kids were out side late at night making all kinds of noise hooplin and hollarin. So I called the Austell Police to have them send a cop around to quite the kids down. The lady from the Austell Police Department tells me we don't service you, we only service the city of Austell! I'm like I am in Austell, she says you're in Cobb County. Im like Austell is in Cobb County, she proceeds to give me Cobb County Police phone number which ended up being what sounded like a neighborhood security guard personal voice mail, not the police department.
I stay off Austell rd half a mile south of East West connector down the street from Target close to South Cobb High School. So where do I technically live? Austell, Marietta, South Cobb (is South Cobb an actual city?) Its confusing. I see alot of Cobb County Police and businesses referencing South Cobb around here.

You live in unincorporated Cobb County. That means that you would receive police services from the Cobb County Police and pay taxes to Cobb County since you do not live within a city boundary.

Wow, so I don't even live in a city, thats crazy. Guest they had to give us some address so they just gave us an Austell address to make it easy for the mail man I guess.

Thanks

It simply means that you do not live within the boundaries of an incorporated city, but rather you live in a part of Cobb County that is not inside a city boundary. You would receive police services from the Cobb County police and you would pay your property taxes to Cobb County, etc.

Well, you aren't under city ordinances that you might not agree with. Well, like you experienced, you get police protection from Cobb County, instead of Austell. You would generally have a longer wait for emergency services. It may also be costly to pay for water and trash pick up. So being annexed will get you better services from the city, and house is usually more marketable when you are ready to sell it.

This. The concept is strange being from Ohio if you mostly lived in a city. I had never heard of any sort of unincorporated anything prior to moving here and even after all this time, I still get confused about all the various police departments. It seems like waste to me to have so many different departments.

But a character friend of mine, who is kind of....I can only say a trip actually likes Cobb County police because he says they "don't discriminate." LOL. He doesn't like to take care of his tags and insurance (he is from Detroit and in Detroit they don't take people to jail for no tags or insurance, they will just give you a huge ticket/fine) so has been arrested by many a department here in metro Atlanta. He said only in Cobb County do you find "diversity" lol. That there are plenty of black, white, Hispanic, and even Asians there locked up on the weekend. I thought that was hilarious. He was pretty shocked to see the Asians as he had never seen them locked up before until he was arrested in Cobb County. He told me that he is going to get insurance so he stops going to jail lol. I hope he does.

One day my neighbor called the police and they didn't even know what department to send. Clayton and Forest Park police ended up coming and it was at least 30 minutes after they called. This is just one reason why I'd be glad when there's no more county governments.
