The City Of Orlando Our Friends Not too far south of us managed to beat us to the punch and opened today the first phase of the "SunRail" Commuter Service...Orlando is Pretty Much Half the Size of Atlanta though and Even They got it together...with plans to open a full 61 mile service in 2016...Kudos...And the schedule is a decent one...I couldnt help but to think of my poor Atlanta and how badly this is needed here As it Chokes slowly evryday from traffic...Granted there were issues today as you will read but hey it was a resounding success...And lastly I cant recall a failed commuter service in recent decades so its safe to say they made a good choice...of course it wont be free and its expensive but its just simply the right thing to do If One wants to remain economically competitive on the world stage

As much as I support commuter rail myself, there are a number of difference I have to point out. First, this is a single line. Because except for a shortline off into some smaller suburbs, it's the only rail line around Orlando.
Second, the state was able to buy the line outright from CSX who was amiable to the arrangement because the state also paid for upgrade to the "bypass" route around Orlando where CSX can shift most of its freight traffic to. Atlanta doesn't really have this option available to it because we really are a terminal city. Any freight "bypass" would be an all-new Right of Way and still couldn't divert much traffic unless it was the railroad version of I-285 and intersected very rail line in and out of the city. But, that's still not a show stopper. The existing lines can be upgraded to handle the increase in traffic, it will just take a bit more effort.

- this is not the Orlando forum

-If NYC wants to stay competitive NYC should stop increasing the cost of living so the middle class will have somewhere to live. NYC should get rid of all the expensive tolls, high taxes, huge dog looking rats so my poor NYC 'ers can live a normal American life. (Notices how everyone outside Atlanta lovesworrying about Atlanta but they aren't worried about their city)

I thought Atlanta resembling an episode of the Walking Dead during the last snow fall would convince the people of ATL to move away from cars.

Really Orlando is not Atlanta's competition. Atlanta competes with Dallas, Miami, and Houston before Orlando. Although a great accomplishment, however the world will not be beating the doors to get to Orlando because of 61 miles of transit.

I am pretty sure Birmingham looked the same

Yet Birmingham barely has a viable bus system, much any less rail.

Good for them, most people in Atlanta prefer to travel by car... and Atlanta has probably the best freeways in the country... shoot maybe even in the world.

You will never see anything like 7585 in any downtown in America...
