Correct, you are allowed to split the payment into 2 when you are moving to GA.

Okay, what if you buy your car in the state of Georgia. Do you still have to pay this tax?

It's like sales tax you'd pay at the dealer. Only now you also have to pay if you buy it from a private party in order to register the car.

Glad I know about this now, so I can be prepared when it's time to get my tags I have an old car 94 Buick Park ave. Shouldn't cost me that much.

If you are like me and keep your car for 10+ years, this new tax is a deal. Huge cash pay out up front, but compared to what I was paying near Boston every year, Georgia saves you money after the 4th or 5th year that you keep your car.

This is the reason you see so many out of state license plates. I can't tell you how many Florida tags I see with local school stickers all over them. The fine for out of state tag is much cheaper than the title tax!

If you already own the car and have tags for it, you will continue to pay annual just as you have been.

Indeed, anyone transferring into the state now has a huge incentive to stay registered elsewhere. Literally thousands of reasons!

A lot of states offer two year registrations now so not too difficult to avoid registering in GA for a few years.
