Fist time home purchase for my wife and I.

When looking at school districts, what is the most important thing to look for? Is it Demographics, extra curricular activities? Reviews of the school online?

That is a very personal question. You can find most of that information at greatschools.net, which also includes its standardized test scores. Perhaps you have a gifted or handicapped child, in which case you would look for different standards.

It depends on where you work- ease of commute is the starting point.
If you have some areas in mind, and more specifics about your kids, you might get more response.

Not elbow room, can't have a driveway or garage because you can't have a car. Also, must be located next to train station! :-)

When looking for a school, the things you must look for are:

1. The school's grade card. There are test scores and rankings in the AJC every year like these:
Best, worst metro CCRPI school scores, 2012 | www.ajc.com

Note that a system can have both top performing and bottom feeder schools in it. This is especially true in the City of Atlanta.

2. Diversity. Hopefully you can find a good school that is racially diverse. I would not select a school that is unbalanced in either way racially. Ideally for our metro, about 55% white, 30% back 10% Hispanic and 5% Asian.

3. Remember that you are not neceesarily stuck in a certain school just because you buy a house in that school's attendance lines. We have magnet schools and charters you can choose from in many areas.
