Actually ElleKaye, Aldi & Trader Joe's are owned by a German company called Albrecht Discounts. They started Aldi in 1948, and bought Trader Joe's in 1979 while they were still tiny. One little tidbit about them is that both buy all of their pasta in bulk from Barilla, and repackage it as their own.

Tesco is a U.K. based mega-chain (basically Britain's version of Wal-Mart), and they launched a virtual clone of TJ's called Fresh & Easy right before the recession. I went to a few around L.A., and they were nice - but they have since sold them off, and many have closed. I think that may be where the confusion is.

According to the Office Depot folks in PTC, their last day is sometime at the end of October, the store closing signs are up and Aldi is coming!!

I'm not into discount food stores, however I truly liken Aldi to Trader Joes. If we can't have the TJs just yet, I welcome the Aldi.
