Hello!

In July we are moving to Georgia from CT. I would like to know how much on average you pay for electricity and water in 2 bedroom apartment for two people. In CT, we rent a 2 bedroom apartment where everything is electric. We do not pay for cold water, so we have only one bill for electricity to pay. During last winter the highest bill was $150 and during summer the bill was about $70-80. What to expect in GA?
Thank you

P.S.: I know there are a lot similar threads but almost all of them are outdated. That's why I created this one.

There is no average. It is highly dependent upon the age (and efficiency) of your HVAC unit, how well your apartment is insulated, what floor it is on, if it is in the shade or sun, and a host of other contributing factors.

Cooling a 2 bedroom apartment in the shade on the ground floor could cost as little as $40 or $50, or on a top floor in the direct sun could easily be over $200 and maybe more.

It also depends on whether you use Georgia Power or one of the local EMCs. Water also depends heavily on where you are, city of Atlanta is more than all others.

Agreed.

I've lived in approx 20 (yes I like to move) places in Georgia in the past 30 years. The utilities can be from the ridiculous to the sublime.

The great thing is you can contact your electricity and gas providers and get a "history" of the utilities for a specific address for the past year. They will quote you an average and I've found them to be spot on most of the time. Also, before you sign be VERY CLEAR as to what utilities you are paying and to whom. Some apts combine utilities and add them to the rent, while others allow you to do your own thing. Stick with the second. Too many issues with the companies the apts sign with and most apartments change owners constantly. If you're renting a house find out how long it's been empty.

Also, find out if there is a deposit and when you'll get it back. Remember, Atlanta is a transient town and these utility companies have been duped many times over so they are trying to protect themselves.
