Florence, Italy is perhaps the most wonderful place to walk that I have ever been in. In a discussion I had recently about the city, I remembered a post architect and writer Steve Mouzon did a few years ago on the true cost of sprawl. Steve wondered why cities give up so much land that supports no retail, no residential, pays no taxes, just to move people out of town on highways. He showed this extraordinary coupling of two photographs at the same scale: one of Florence, Italy, and one of an interchange in Atlanta, Georgia.

Steve notes that the entire Duomo cathedral could fit in one of the loops of the interchange. You could spend days walking the streets of Florence (I have) and find three hundred and fifty thousand residents shopping, eating, selling wonderful leather goods, going to fabulous galleries and palaces and museums. It even has a a grade separated elevated pedestrian skywalk.

Apples and satellites.

And reading the comments, it appears as though the two images actually aren't at the same scale and this only includes the old city of Florence, not the entire municipality.

They've got a few pretty good-sized freeway interchanges of their own over there in Florence.

Florence extends far beyond that picture.

I imagine historic downtown Atlanta could fit inside that Florence freeway interchange.

It's really starting to irk my nerves with all this "insert area here" could fit inside Atlanta.

We understand we're a sprawling region. Atlanta is developing just like Los Angeles did in the 60's and 70's before it started densifying and (according to how many people would love to live there) it hasn't stopped SoCal from being great.

How about spending more effort attacking those who work under the Gold Dome. I CANNOT WAIT to see Deal's azz off West Paces Ferry Rd.

Please. The scale of the buildings in either picture aren't even close. This is a fail.
