Google has added the ability to go back in time to previous street views. Someone put together a before and after set for Atlanta. Rather impressive changes for 7 years with a big recession in the middle.

Yeah. It's amazing the changes in such a short time. And the best part is in the past progress in Atlanta only meant more high rises. Now there's more highrises, mid rises and overall improvement or transformation of many blighted areas.

Even in the "current" Google Street view - you can go to some streets and see what they looked like circa 2007; or at least you could as of a few weeks ago. Perhaps the reason for this is because these streets have been closed-off since then, and the streetview cars could no longer access these areas. I know that I was recently able to see Bowen Homes and Herndon Homes using the current Google street view - from a time before these housing projects were demolished.

One of the things that impresses me about those photos is how much the quality/resolution of the street views have improved since 2007. Pretty soon, those cars will be able to see inside of buildings - lol.

I've often noticed that you can be on street view and change angles and the image reverts back to a previous view, changes seasons or goes from bright and sunny to overcast and cloudy. Don't know how or why that is. It's a scary amazing bit of technology.

This is just scratching the surface, but it is something, when you consider that many of these locales, from Midtown to the Beltline, looked much different only six years ago. Who knows where Atlanta will be in six or seven years? Downtown's already beginning to turn the corner, it could be the next Midtown in 2021! We may start seeing increased activity in Vine City or East Lake. That's not even counting the "new urbanist" parts of Atlanta's suburbs.

What will we see from the Google Street View scenes in 2020?

This city is exploding. I was in East Atlanta at the Argosy tonight. It was my first time out relatively late in East Atlanta in about 2 years and the feel is totally different. There were many people out walking from bar to bar on the street, the highly seedy vibe of a few years ago just felt different. With a few more residents, east atlanta will be a really vibrant neighborhood with very few storefront vacancies. 2014 is a huge year for this city; just wait till streetcar, PCM, Buckhead ATL, Krog Street Mkt and College Football HOF are all open.
