My boyfriend and I will be moving to ATL in a couple months and are considering various northern suburbs as I will be working in northern ATL (just outside the perimeter). We were looking into the Fair Oaks neighborhood in Marietta. I have read into Marietta and understand there are areas to avoid. Is Fair Oaks one of them?

We are coming from Philadelphia and have had our fair share of violence and crime. I am thinking Fair Oaks might not be bad. Any thought?

Fair Oaks is actually not Marietta. It's unincorporated Cobb County, with a Marietta or Smyrna address depending on where in Fair Oaks, and a federal Census-designated-place (CDP). Fair Oaks gets nicer as you are closer to Atlanta Rd, or Garrison Rd. Crime is ok as long as you stay away from apartments and trailer parks. It'll be about the same as central Marietta (like areas North and South of the square) or Northern Smyrna (North of Windy Hill).

So you understand the boundaries of Fair Oaks: Generally with some exceptions Fair Oaks is bounded by Pat Mell Rd to the South, and Garrison Rd to the North, and Sandtown Rd to the West.

Please provide answers to the following so we can better guide you:
1. Budget
2. House/Condo/Townhome? (buy/rent?)
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home)
4. Children(public school vs. private)
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not?
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood.

I should mention that according to a long-time Marietta resident I know: historically, Fair Oaks is more or less the area between the Austell Rd and Miller Ave, more or less, bounded on the West by S. Cobb Dr and East by Atlanta Rd. When forming the CDP, they just included all the unincorporated area surrounding it as well, which is fine now since it's all pretty homogenous.

I know I'm going to get smashed for saying this (as I always do), but Atlanta (the city) has nearly double the crime rate of Philly and yet has only a third if Philly's population. People from up north automatically assume Atlanta has less crime because it's in the south when that's not true. The suburbs have a lot of crime too.

You can find nice areas to live in, and northern Atlanta/northern suburbs are typically nice/safe. Just make sure you do your research and come on here and ask questions about the areas you are looking at.

Atlanta_BD: There's parts of Philli that are really dangerous (though somewhat safer than they used to be). Atlanta doesn't have any violent areas, just areas with a bit more crime than others.
