Just chiming in on 'diversity'....I am a senior citizen, looking for a 'home' where I can be closer to my children. Gainwsville, Duluth and Flowery Branch. But I cannot tolerate the congestion. What would be you advice for me. Can I survive the five o'clock rush hour or would you advise me to move on.....thanks

Here is my response- from an HBCU sister.

My family is considering moving to Cumming as well. I've lived all over Atlanta, outside the U.S. and inside the U.S. and yes the community does lack diversity. Your fellow African American friends may joke that they won't visit you for fear of harassment, etc. etc.- but many of this is unfounded. The community has transitioned in recent years with transplants moving to the community attracted to the low cost of living, you may have a few bad apples that create a bad impression.

Racism is subtle. It is not overt, and may not be in your face- but it exists. I wouldn't eliminate Cumming based on this because there are tradeoffs for living in different areas and I would not allow racism to limit options of creating the quality of life you want for your family. I'd shake off the silly people who are behind the times, step into my home and enjoy the acreage, peace and quiet, and peace of mind of country living. Ahhh....

This is precisely what I've been trying to say loveatlgc.
I also graduated from an HBCU, FAMU namely. My wife and I love the Cumming area
..... aside from its distance from ATL.

Lakeside living is worth it as well as the peace we get from all the noise.

And of course this is where someone has to ask whether "diversity" means people who look different or who have different sounding last names, or whether "diversity" is about different perspectives and different socioeconomic backgrounds.

In many cases, people will be grouped more by their socioeconomic background than by race or ethnicity. I live on a cul-de-sac where there are 5 families and we're the only white family. Two are black, one is of Indian heritage (Asian, not native American), and the other is of some type of southeast Asian heritage (I think Pakistani). We all get along well. We all take care of our homes. We all want our children to be safe and educated. At least one of them I know is non-Christian (and I'm an atheist).

I have more in common with my non-white neighbors than I do with some white trash redneck from a small town in south Georgia who goes to church 7 days a week. So is where I live diverse, or not? I would argue it's actually not, despite the black and brown skin of my neighbors, because we all probably have very similar incomes and definitely have similar values and concerns.

Just food for thought from the racist and cookie cutter suburbs.

Check Trulia and Zillow. Cumming/Forsyth is just about the only place anyone in the middle class can afford to buy or rent anywhere north of Atlanta between I-75 and I-85.

Pickins is slim! I have to move in the next few months and think that the increase in rent is going to gobble up my increase in salary.
