I was watching the news this morning and heard that school was starting in Rockdale County today. For a few moments, I thought I must have accidentally been watching an old DVR. It's July!

I checked the Website (Back to School | Back 2 School Start Dates | www.wsbtv.com) and saw that many ATL metro counties have start dates in the next week or so.

What happened to three months off for summer?

Was it ever really 3 months? I mean, I'm 25 and for as long as I can remember we started in the first week of August and got out in mid-late May.

Well, I'm not telling my age lol, but it seemed roughly three months. We got out around the first week of June and went back around the last week August or right after Labor Day.

My friend is a teacher in NYC, and it doesn't seem like the students are getting out any later there than they are here yet they start in September. Starting in July is ridiculous though unless we're changing to a year round school schedule.

The last day of school in NYC this year was 6/26 a month after most metro Atlanta districts ended their school year. AFAIK all or nearly all of the metro area districts are returning to a 180 school calendar after years of shortened calendars through involuntary furlough days.

I dislike the start in early August end in May school calendar but I don't foresee it changing.

There are still 180 instructional days in the school year, just like always. The earlier start is offset during the year with several week-long holidays. Cherokee starts Aug 4 after a 9-week summer. But the kids get a week off in September, November, February, and March/April. This is in addition to the two weeks for Christmas and New Year and the other one-day holidays.

It took me a little while to adjust to it, but I like the calendar better than the 11 to 12 week summer we had in Fulton County. The kids don't forget as much over the summer, and having the breaks during the school year is beneficial for them. August weather is usually so hot that the kids can't be outdoors much anyway, unless they are in a pool. February is also a great time of year to go to Disney World!

I am not disputing it, but it does not seem like she worked until the end of June. I'm not familiar with the different school systems there, but the elementary where she works is PS# something.

This is how I remember it. I even recall that when you went back to school shopping, you'd be getting fall clothes - you know sweaters and what not.

I am 53 and as far as I can remember our school was out before June 1 and not back in until October 1 but we went to Catholic School and I don't know how they are now since my children are grown and have been out of school for years.
