Frankly I think the value of a city is about as closely related to international fame as the value of a person is to the number of Facebook friends they have.
I'm not arguing "value." This was never about value. Its about being world class. My initial claim was an anecdotal one stating I had had many people ask me if Atlanta had casinos. That has nothing to do with value but global perception. Which Atlanta lacks in. A city can be valuable without being famous, which I would argue what Atlanta is. A city can also be famous without being valuable, which is what I would argue Las Vegas is. I wouldn't consider either world class.

I didn't mean to imply that you were. I was just explaining why I'm not defensive.

When talking to anyone under the age of 25 they still don't know anything about Atlanta because they were too young to care about the Olympics in 96.

I'm not saying that Atlantic City is more well known than Atlanta, but that people think they are the same thing. Many times, they know our sports teams, but that's about all they can connect with. Honest to god, I met an Aussie that traveled to Atlanta thinking it had casinos. He said he ended up enjoying his time at Stone Mountain and the Cyclorama (he said he fell in love a bit with the American Civil War). I'm also not saying they have never heard of Atlanta, many say they have heard of the city. The German city of Dusseldorf is rated as a Beta city (1 step below Atlanta's rating) how many on here do you think could tell me anything about Dusseldorf without looking it up? What about Frankfurt? It's an Alpha city, how much do you think the average person in the US knows about Frankfurt? Think they could tell you if it was East or West Germany?

So many people in other countries view the US as New York on the East, LA on the West and Texas is everything in the middle. I can honestly count on two hands the number of people I've met that knew where Atlanta was and anything about it.
I wonder if you're making the people in other countries sound a little less informed than they are. Senoia, GA gets visitors now from all over the world and it's because of The Walking Dead. Somehow these visitors know to come to Atlanta to get to Senoia and not land in Atlantic City.

This forum reminds me of reading stock forums. It's as though some people are "shorting" Atlanta and come to the discussion here to pour cold water on anything positive. Obviously, Atlanta has very positive features or it wouldn't have grown as fast as it has. It has ranked consistently in the Alpha level of world cities for a number of years now. 11% of the people in Georgia were born in another country and not the US (as of 2012, it may be higher now). I think that's more credible than someone who's talked with a few people in a hotel someplace and found that a couple of them didn't know a lot of specific information about Atlanta.

You have simplified the argument in that the people that actively sought out locations for the walking dead didn't confuse the two cities. Somehow that indicates the rest of the world knows about the city of Atlanta. There are a small amount of people from all over the world that seek out Devil's Marbles and Kakado National Park in the northern territory of Australia. Darwin has 12% of its residence from other countries. It's not world class either.

You're anecdotal evidence is you've met a few internationals in Georgia that had actively sought it out. My anecdotal evidence was after living abroad for a number of years is I've only met a few people that really knew much of anything about Atlanta.

Also no one is shorting Atlanta or trying to pour cold water on it. I'm being honest when I said it was amazing to me the number of people abroad that thought Atlanta and Atlantic City where the same thing. Then some posters told me that was BS. I would love to tell you all the questions I get when I tell people I'm from Atlanta:
-Is that where they have a bunch of casinos?
-Is that where that giant storm hit a while ago? (Katrina)
-Don't you have really good skiing?
-Isn't that on the west coast near California?

I love Atlanta, there is a reason I come here to see whats happening in the city I grew up in even though I don't live there anymore. However, after moving abroad it was a bit of an eye opener as to where Atlanta stands in the world view.

But, you're getting the scale of comparison wrong in your argument again. You're comparing people who're interested in visiting the sites associated with the most watched show in the history of cable TV with people who want to visit Kakadu National Park.

People really come here to see where a mindless horror serial is filmed? They must have a lot of time on their hands.

I suppose when people have different interests from you, it just seems like they have a lot of time on their hands. They may think that people who post a lot in forums have a lot of time on their hands.

Yeah, well I've got enough time on my hands to do that, but spend good money and time traveling to a location where a TV show is filmed? Gee. Hope their kids have 3 squares a day... Oh, and if that's what they do, I'm not sure they have many thoughts to think.
