Smyrna's government is considering allowing same sex couples benefits when they work for the government. It's a great sign for the metro area tolerance for LGBT, and a huge step forward for Cobb county, who years back were banned from hosting any events for the Olympics for official proclamations about homosexuals. Obviously, this doesn't mean a huge shift for the entire county, since Smyrna is of course the most progressive part of the county.

Progressive now but not always in the past: Smyrna has come far, when its past is represented by this public comment at the end of the following meeting by a resident of 50-something years (you can probably guess what it's going to be): City Council on 2014-08-04 7:30 PM - Aug 4th, 2014

Good for Smyrna! They would join a small club of Georgia cities and jurisdictions offering same-sex domestic partnerships and/or anti-discrimination protections for LGBT employees (per Wikipedia):

- DeKalb County
- City of Atlanta
- City of Decatur
- City of Clarkston
- City of Doraville
- City of Avondale Estates
- Fulton County
- City of Pine Lake
- Athens-Clarke County
- Bibb County (consolidated with Macon in 2012-2013)
- City of Savannah
- City of Columbus
- Tybee Island

Of course, the state of Georgia constitutionally bans same-sex marriage and civil unions, although there is a lawsuit in federal court seeking to overturn the ban; in addition, there are few to no anti-discrimination protections at the state level for LGBT persons. Hopefully this all changes within the next year or two!

Don't forget City of East Point. we provide Domestic Partnership benefits and have since at least 2010, I think. We are also one of only 3 cities in Georgia with a Mayor (Jannquell Peters) that has publicly and unequivocally stated support for Same Sex Marriage.
