Does an HOA have the right to collect and record personal information? Drivers license or GA ID? Car registrations? Names, cell phones number and email addresses of all occupants? Since we have a parking garage I understand the need to know the car assigned to parking spot so car description and license plate should be all that is required. We send in car description and license annually or when requested but the board is now saying they have lost control of the situation and need more from us. What? Lost control! So more personal info is required. Isn't this a slippery slope?

I certainly see no reason that you provide them with any more information than you already have. I would refuse.

So far everything you have mentioned seems normal and reasonable.....HOWEVER, "lost control" is what concerns me.

Sounds like they don't know who is living in your building, and they'd like to change that. What's the slippery slope?

I am aware that a fair indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Therefore, will the manager then lose control of your email addresses and cell phone numbers?

I would wonder about lost control. I would wonder about over what. I would want them to be more specific.

Perhaps they mean since the original owners there are new ones moving in and some tenants as well and the owners have forgotten to send the new vehicle info to the hoa manager. Or to tell their tenants to do that.

Perhaps, in your area, the hoa manager doesn't need to fill out or sign off on anything when a unit is purchased...at which time the manager could state that the vehicle info is needed.

How are the finances? Are they giving out that info easily or keeping that a secret too?

I would refuse. All they need are your tag number and your unit number.

Slippery slope - a demand of info and repercussions of fines if we don't comply by a certain date. So basically what's next? SS#s and credit reports for financial worthiness?

We don't have onsite management and we get assessed every year because we drop below reserves.

Requesting more personal info does not solve a parking situation.

I can see the use of having phone numbers and emails of residents. How else do they notify people in an emergency? As far as parking goes, a license plate and car make should suffice.

So, essentially because they "lost control" they feel they will be trusted with more personal information.

Since they "lost control" they feel fining because of this inability to control will be agreeable.

You should check your CC&Rs and see what rights they have as far as what they can insitute without a vote and what they can fine over and how much.

Where's your board on this?
