MARTA needs to get some rail out to South DeKalb and North Fulton before they start trying to give it to to newcomers. South Dekalb and North Fulton got in at the outset and having paying their taxes for over two generations.

I'm glad Clayton is finally seeing the light 50 years after this system got underway, but fair is fair. You can't poke a stick in the eye of your long term constituents and go gallivanting off somewhere else.

As far as HRT construction goes, rail expansion projects in S. DeKalb and N. Fulton are already far ahead of a potential Clayton line in planning and development. The commuter rail option (which I disagree with) is a bit different.

I think the commuter rail to College Park is a bit of a waste. Rail just to have rail. If they took it downtown it would make sense. They could serve them better with express buses. HRT would, of course, be more expensive, but it just makes more long term sense than a stub rail line or duplicating service with HRT and Commuter rail.

It won't be a bad thing if Clayton gets rail first, commuter rail or HRT. If they can advance the plans, there's no reason not to. It may be just the embarrassment the other two counties to get moving on their own plans. But the commuter rail is cheaper, and faster to build than HRT, so even if the planning and movement on it is slower, it could still get built first.

Actually, the commuter rail plan was in its final stages for years, but the state never used the grant money. This is why many Clayton cities have undone developments because they were making room for commuter rail stations. Jonesboro redid their downtown, Morrow was building a mixed-use development, and Forest Park was building a transit village, they literally demolished main st for. Where is this investment happening in Dekalb?

Portland has commuter rail that extends from a transfer point with their LRT and it seems to do jut fine. Also, this will provide rail-based transit to the airport from Clayton County, via East Point Station where HRT trains will be arriving every 5 minutes.

We just need to be sure DeKalb and Fulton stay at the top of the list.

They have been supporting and paying for MARTA for half a century and they don't need to be shoved aside by somebody who wants to break in line.

Accept half the sales tax collected in Clayton I being set aside for rail-based transit. There is a local funding source for this project that is separate from the MARTA's capital improvements fund.
