Hello everyone.. My family and I are thinking of moving in the next year or so. We live up near Chicago, and are tired of this crappy weather! We are looking near the Georgia/Tennessee line.. what would you guys say are the nicest cities ??

Nice Weather, Affordable homes.. things to do/shop... and Safety are main issues.

Yeah, sounds like a question that might be better for the Chattanooga forum.

In Tennessee, Chattanooga is great. Ooltewah, Collegedale, Soddy-Daisy, Signal Mountain.

In NW Georgia, Ringgold, Chickamauga, Chatsworth, Trenton (the last two might be the biggest culture shock for you) are nice small towns. Chatsworth would be the longest drive to Chattanooga.

Well, Chattanooga area was a possibility.. but I heard it's not the safest.. I was really loving Georgia.. it looked beautiful.. I've lived in both the suburbs and small country towns.. so I'm ok with everything.. I would just really love if we could find a safe town, with shops and stuff to do.. or at least close by

Small towns always safer than large towns, North Georgia towns are safer and closer to Atlanta Airport

Dalton is a very nice city, very diverse huge Latino population due to the carpet mils, etc, but some very very wealthy carpet moguls with mansions up on Rocky Face.

Even Atlanta can get chilly but it doesn't snow much here. Generally, there's this high elevation plateau with rolling hills called the Piedmont, which is near the Appalachians. Atlanta is in the Piedmont. The Piedmont is about 1k feet up and is quite a bit colder than coastal area. However, Chattanooga and other areas around the Blue Ridge Mountains and especially the Smokeys are even higher elevation than the Piedmont and can feel pretty cold. Not Chicago cold, but parts of Tennessee, GA and NC in and near the mountains can be almost as cold as the NYC area a lot of the time and snow quite a bit.

Once you leave the Piedmont around Macon, GA you enter the coastal plain and it gets sub-tropical very quickly.
