Greetings from the Raleigh forum! We are coming to Atlanta for a few days and I'm wondering if anyone could recommend some places to see / things to do (preferably inexpensive) with a 5 year old boy other than the tourist "staples" (Aquarium, Zoo, Lego Center). Especially looking for some short evening activities (some Holiday displays perhaps?) since almost everything seems to close at 5 pm.

There are some nice recommendations in this thread, but I'm looking for the kid-friendly options specifically.

Also do we need to watch out for any special traffic conditions going in/out of Downtown (we'll be staying in Cumberland Mall area)? Going to the Zoo we have an option to take 285 to 20 or 75. 75 is shortest but it goes through Downtown, so would you recommend the other route (driving around 10 am)?

Thank you!

The Atlanta Botanical Garden has a great light display for the holidays (which is after 5pm).
Atlantic Station(shopping, eating, movies) has ice skating and is decorated for the holidays, and it's at 17th street which is not far from where you are staying.
http://www.puppet.org/perform/rudolph.shtml The Atlanta Center for Puppertry Arts is doing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer which is for ages 4 up.

You will be fine taking 75 to the zoo. The only time that route is bad is during the height of rush hour traffic and that should be light next week. From Cumberland Mall area - 285 to 20 has the potentially of being a worse nightmare

Garden Lights is definitely nice for the whole family.

Here are a couple more suggestions:

Chattahoochee Nature Center - Atlanta

Fernbank Science Center - Where Science Becomes an Adventure

I've noted the Chattahoochee Nature Center for myself, thanks!

I don't know what its like with the ice skating, but I never see any kids after 7 or 8 at Atlantic Station. If you are doing an evening movie or dinner stick with Cumberland Mall. Its more family friendly.

Skating rink at Park Tavern (Piedmont Park) opens Thanksgiving. Great fun with the kiddos!
