City of South DeKalb Now!

City of South DeKalb has had a lot of traction in the last few weeks. They have raised the initial deposit to do the feasibility study and are holding meetings with the community. With a population of ~300,000 they would be the second largest city in the state.

Very interesting. I never knew that this was proposed but I hope it goes well for South DeKalb. I am from S. DeKalb and I think this would be huge for the area.

Being there is a move to incorporate all of DeKalb, it's good to see the folks of South DeKalb make plans for their area.

I think a more logical boundary would be for Hairston Rd to be the eastern boundary, connecting with the eastern boundary in the southern portion of the map as illustrated, and Rockbridge Rd. from Hairston Rd. over to Memorial Dr. as the northern boundary. I would leave the rest of the boundaries unchanged.

"Kathryn Rice and Jason Lary, signatories for the proposed cities of South DeKalb and Stonecrest in DeKalb County submitted their groups’ signed maps Monday to the office of Representative Amy Carter, Chair of the GA State House Governmental Affairs committee.

If approved, the city of South DeKalb will represent a historic step in DeKalb county’s history. The population of South DeKalb (294,398) will render it the second largest city in the state of Georgia. If South DeKalb is approved along with Stonecrest (population of approximately 50,000) and the three cities in the north, it would essentially mark the municipalization of DeKalb County..."

Hopefully residents there would elect better Representatives than they have as unincorporated Dekalb for so many years. I don't see how incorporating this area would help them though, they have been net recipients from the Northside.

I'd rather see municipalization of DeKalb through annexations by Atlanta, Clarkston, Stone Mountain, and Lithonia. This just seems like they're incorporating because everyone else is doing it.

South DeKalb has got some good folks working on this. If they get it through they could have some major clout in this region.

That's the whole key to DeKalb's future success or failure, whether or not it incorporates!!

That's what I was thinking. There's nothing in common with those areas except they're in Dekalb. It's just a bunch of suburbs running together.
