I can tell you that here in the Washington DC area, rail access to affluent suburbs has not increased crime at all. The closest major shopping areas accessible by metro-rail to inner-city Washington, such as Pentagon City Mall, Ballston Commons Mall (Arlington), Friendship Heights/Bethesda, (and now Tysons Corner Mall), remain very respectable and have mainly high-end clientele.
