Can someone please describe how much the Hope Scholarship covers for tuition at UGA if an in-state student qualifies?

Yes, it does. UGA is a public school and it covers all of your tuition for public schools. Well, 90% of your tuition if you aren't at a certain GPA threshold, but overall, yes it will.

HOPE absolutely does NOT cover all tuition at public schools. The amount of tuition the HOPE scholarship covers was capped several years ago and varies by school. Depending on the number of hours you are taking, it leaves a shortfall of about $1,000 per semester that must be paid out of pocket.

Here is the chart showing what HOPE will pay at each school:

Here is UGA's tuition rates for 2014:

UGA has some good cost breakdowns under HOPE on their website here:

HOPE Scholarship and the Flat Rate Tuition Model Student Enrolled in 15 hours Tuition Assessed: $4,295.00 HOPE Payment: - $3,390.00 Out of Pocket: = $905.00 Student Enrolled in 13 hours Tuition Assessed: $4,295.00 HOPE Payment: - $2,938.00 Out of Pocket: = $1,357.00 Out of pocket difference between 15 and 13 hours: $452.00

The website gacollege411.org outlines all of the details for Hope Scholarship in addition to the links that Red92 gave you. It can be confusing and a lot of people have misunderstandings. Use the links to get the correct information if you are counting on that funding.

Since some of the folks reading this are probably looking for ways to finance college education in Georgia, Georgia's 529 plan is worth a mention. It is sort an IRA for education. The first $2000 contributions are tax deductible on your Georgia income tax, and the investment grows tax-free for both State and Federal-you can change the beneficiary, if needed--and there is a way of keeping any unused funds. Also, the funds can be used for an in-state or out-of-state public or private school.
I think this is the link (from my phone) Path2College 529 Plan
