Is the Lawrenceville area of N Atlanta a nice and safe area as compared to Athens?

Depends on what part, since L'Ville is large. There are 5 possible school clusters: Peachtree Ride, Mill Creek (a portion will soon be Mountain View), Berkmar, Brookwood, Grayson ( will be spilt into ARCHER), AND Collins Hill. Personally I wood only live in Peachtree Ridge, Collins Hill, and Grayson.

Yes, it all depends on where in Lawrenceville. I would agree with mrdkb for the most part, other than to say that there are some nice areas within the brookwood school cluster. I work as a police officer in Lawrenceville, so I can speak a lot about the safety. At first glance, one would assume that the city is high in crime. This is not true. There are some pockets of higher crime, but overall it is a pretty boring place.. which is good. Again, with Athens.. it's much the same. Some areas are pretty bad, while others are quite nice. It just depends on what you want and where you need to be.

I've lived in Athens, Larryville, and Atlanta. Between Larryville and Athens I'd agree with Steven's assessment on crime. But I'd say there's more to do in Athens and it's a cute little town. Ultimately, live close to where you will work is my standard advice.
