The report ranks Atlanta the No. 100 economic performer out of the 300 largest metros around the world in 2014. Its employment grew 2.3 percent and its GDP per capita rose 1.5 percent to $52,609 (65th in the world). Its total GDP hit $294.4 billion (37th).
Extrapolated over a wider time frame -- 2009 to 2014 -- Atlanta was the No. 169 metro economy. And from 2000 to 2014, it ranked 258th.

With the Atlanta metro area having a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of $294.4 billion, without Metro Atlanta the state of Georgia would only have a Gross Domestic Product/Gross State Product of about $130 billion, a figure that would drop the state of Georgia's Gross State Product from 11th-largest to 33rd-largest in the union.

Having the 33rd-largest Gross State Product would be a position that would place a Metro Atlanta-less state of Georgia below nearby Southeastern states like Tennessee (19th), Alabama (26th), South Carolina (27th) and Kentucky (28th).

With a GDP of $294.4 billion, if Metro Atlanta were its own state, Metro Atlanta would have the 16th-largest Gross State Product in the union.

With the state of Georgia having a current Gross State Product of $424.6 billion (the latest figures available as of 2013), a $424.6 billion Gross State Product that has been propelled by the presence of the $294.4 billion GDP Atlanta Metro area, a good goal at this point would be for Georgia's leadership to figure out what strategic investments the state needs to make to push its Gross State Product over the $1 trillion mark in 2014-2015 dollars.

Rising over the $1 trillion mark (in 2014-2015 dollars) would make Georgia's Gross State Product the 4th-largest in the union behind the states of California, Texas and New York, which ideally is where the state of Georgia should be aiming to be economically in the long-term.

According to the BEA, metro Atlanta was $307 billion in 2013.

2014 numbers have not been calculated or released yet.

Atlanta ranked 16th in the US, and there were some cities that ranked ahead of it that were surprising.

The rank is 100th in growth; not contribution to GDP. The size of the circle represents GDP which is still on the small side compared to other large metros around the world. Still lagging behind Dallas unfortunately, but will probably catch up to more established cities like Boston and Philadelphia soon.

100th in the world? Pretty darn good I think.
