Hi everyone. I'm relocating to DC, and for reasons beyond my control, I cannot take my cats with me. I have two beautiful, 3-year-old cats who are sisters, and have not been separated since birth. They get along fine with small dogs (mine is a shih tzu), but they've never been around bigger dogs, so I don't know.

I have done everything I can (Craigslist, AJC, flyers) to find my babies a home; I've even tried to take them to the Animal Shelter in three different counties, but they're all full and not accepting any new felines.

They're both very easy-going and the easiest-to-please pets I've ever owned. It's breaking my heart to leave them, but it'll break my heart even more if I can't find them a home. I'm leaving in just a few days, and I really don't know what to do. If you, or someone you know, would like two loyal, loving cats, please let me know. I may be able to help with food and litter, if need be.

Pictures upon request.

Wow, this is strange, we had the same situation before we moved here. I also posted to Craigslist, and I got responses right away. Do you think you can put them in different foster homes down here?

I wish I saved the addresses that some of the responders gave me. I found a foster home for my cat so we didn't need to use those services. I know it sounds hard but try placing them separately you might have more luck.

Just reading that last sentence brought tears to my eyes.

My cats are rescued, and were severely abused by some idiot ghetto children when they were newborn kittens. They suffered no lasting physical trauma, but one of them is still traumatized from the abuse, and doesn't automatically give her trust to humans. She relies heavily on her relationship with her sister, and while the other one could get along just fine by herself, the traumatized one would be miserable. She's very timid and introverted; she's the perfect example of a "scaredy cat." LOL!

Once she's comfortable, she's as normal as any other cat. Her only "problem" (if you can call it that) is that she will hide under a bed or couch or in a corner or closet when she's scared (if there's noisy company or a lot of strangers around).

Anyway, I just don't see separating them as an option. I don't know what on earth to do.

It may be a long shot, but you might post to the pets>cat forum here. Someone reading may live in your area and will adopt the cats. Good luck!

I think breaking them up is a possible choice you'll need to make if it's the only way you'll find a home. They'll be ok -- we had to do the same thing once. The other option is maybe finding a temporary home while you look for someone that will take the sisters.

Go to Petsmart on Saturday. They have pet adoptions there, and the people who foster the cats are usually there too on Saturdays. Maybe one of the foster families will be able to take your cats and find them a new home.

Good luck!

Forsyth County Animal Shelter is a no-kill animal shelter. You could try contacting them if you can't find a good home.
