If it is not Atlanta, what Southern City has the best downtown? (Savannah: university, living in)

New Orleans is New Orleans, but not everyone thinks strip clubs and casinos and a stench from liquor and beer every morning before they clean up (most people don't, but if you have ever walked down Bourbon St. at 8am....), makes a good downtown.

If you think that Bourbon Street is all New Orleans downtown consist of then I don't know what to tell you. I'm not going to even waste my time to list the dozens and dozens of things to do in downtown New Orleans that doesn't conist of strip clubs,stench and casinos. smh

I kinda like the party wild side of New Orleans thats one of the man reasons I love New Orleans, you can go on a bender for a week I love your drinking laws and lack of closing hours for bars

In both regards, I think Savannah wins on the very narrow focus of "Downtown" only.

I totally agree with you about Downtown New Orleans. The only way it is enjoyable is if you are sloppy drunk, and as you said, not everyone is in to that.

You're crazy if you think getting sloppy drunk is the only thing to do in downtown New Orleans. Some of you people on City-Data need to stop spreading falsehoods. And stop being disrespectful to the GREAT city of New Orleans who is approaching her 300 birthday soon. Everyone knows that NOLA has the best downtown in the south, ya'll need to stop playing. Those cities yall are naming with all due respect are nowhere near as lively as NOLA and ya'll know it. As the saying goes "Haters gonna hate"

People are so touchy here!!!!

I love New Orleans and I don't do the casinos or strip clubs. But the very presence of casinos and strip clubs and the stench right on the fringe of downtown can be a real turnoff for some. I don't consider it a plus (but I understand some people do).

I didn't say that was the only thing you could do, rather that's the best way to truly enjoy the area. That's not hate either. For better or worse, that's exactly the way New Orleans has molded their Downtown. While there is business and hip urban culture there, it's overshadowed by the party scene. Anyone who believes otherwise is just kidding themselves.

I disagree that getting sloppy drunk, going to strip clubs and casinos is the best way to enjoy downtown NOLA. It's just one on MANY ways to enjoy yourself. However, I do agree with you that the business and urban culture is overshadowed by the party scene, there's no denying that.

It doesn't matter what FL cities are like culturally regarding a discussion of downtowns in the South.

Florida is in the South. Whether or not it is culturally Southern is irrelevant when discussing something like this.

As for New Orleans, if you associate it as just drunks and strip clubs, you are missing out on a lot in a great American city.

I remember seeing an episode of Married With Children one time when the Bundy's went to Florida for a vacation. Made up town name was Dumpwater... LOL... I can't exactly remember the storyline, but they were with beer guzzling men with caps and in trailer parks playing cards and cheesily dressed women in hair curlers were swatting flies... LOL... It was clear they were trying to portray a "redneck" image... More of Florida might be southern than I think... I still don't think Miami would "feel southern" though...

If you're on Lake Okeechobee, you're in south Florida.
