Planning for life after Turner Field is about to begin | Atlanta News & Opinion Blog | Fresh Loaf | Creative Loafing Atlanta

Quote:
Sixteen months have passed since Atlanta Braves officials announced that the team will leave Turner Field behind for a shiny new stadium in Cobb County. With their departure date getting closer by the day, many residents are wondering what will replace a site built for America's pastime but which hasn't served their needs on a daily basis for decades.

In an effort to plan for life after the Braves' departure, the Atlanta Regional Commission has awarded a $212,000 grant to the neighborhoods adjacent to Turner Field. The Livable Communities Initiative grant is intended to help reimagine the future of the stadium site and adjacent parking lots. The Turner Field LCI — which will study more than 1,300 acres of land including Summerhill, Peoplestown, Mechanicsville, Pittsburgh, and Grant Park — was one of eight grants handed out to metro Atlanta communities this year.

Since the city will decide who will get it, doesn't this seem like simply flushing 200k down the toilet?

No because LCI grant is for the surrounding neighborhoods not the site itself. For the City of Atlanta facilitate the grant, they must adhere to the LCI guidelines or wind up forfeiting their use of the funds.

What is there to plan?

The mayor has known for a long time what's best for the site:

This is the chance to get this site right and completely change the surrounding neighborhoods.

I hope they get MARTA to either run a high-frequency bus route, or get moving on getting the streetcar down there.

I think a streetcar extension to Grant Park and maybe a line down RDA to West End. The VMF can support 2-4 more cars.
