I don't get this idea of "fake" downtowns.
Every town started when some people got together and said, "Hey, why don't we build a few places here and call it a town? Maybe people will start coming here to live and/or do business."
A lot of times they were started in swamps, pastures or on the banks of rivers that routinely flooded.

cq - What do you mean, "fake"? They are real bricks and mortar. Do you mean Atlantic Station is fake, as well? Or Buckhead Atlanta? Don't be so darn pessimistic.

I understand what he means by "Fake". it's basically planned and you wind up with a whole "town" all at once, as opposed to the natural development of a city. EG: A port of trade (harbor or railroad station), next comes the bank, then comes the saloon/hotel, and sheriff, then come the first houses for those people's families, and then the housing for the other various employees of things and so on and so forth.
