I really hope this bill becomes law....
Quote:
“This bill simply creates limits where constituents of ours around the state are sometimes used as ATM machines going through small municipalities,” said Setzler. “If municipalties get a certain amout of revenue from traffic citations, it is disclosed so everyone sees it and this puts some limitations on it.”

The bill was introduced following an Atlanta Journal-Constitution analysis that exposed numerous police departments for raking in exorbitant fine amounts.

Bad business. They should be tightening the screws on speeders, not easing up.

Can't tell if this will help eliminate speed traps or further enable entitled drivers. Maybe both.

As we saw with Ferguson, in small towns this practice often extends beyond speeding. Sad that so many small towns cannot finance their operations without fleecing the citizens.

I've never had nearly as much problem with police in Atlanta as I've had in the outer small towns.

Bull****. Speed limits are often set artificially low just so police can do this.

Totally agree. Time to reign in the Boss Hogg Police corruption going on in these cities.

And I stand on this opinion all the way.

I like the way NH does Fines and Court Fee's etc.

All the Fines money/fees go to the state, it get returned to the cities/town/counties, on a formula, State keep 10%, State Police get 10%, 40% goes back to city/town based on the percent of licensed drivers in that town vs total state, 40% goes back on the % of Lane miles in that town vs Total State.

So when the cop write a ticket for "Safety" its, not a a revenue source. Since the dollars collected are not a 1:1 ratio coming back to that jurisdiction.

This bill is a step in the right direction. The town of Arcade used to lower the speed limit on U.S. 129 to 45 even though it was a bypass around the town. The cops would sit there and pick people off all day, until the state of Georgia put the smack down on them.

Pennsylvania does it best. Local police aren't even allowed to run radar there. Only the state police can. Makes up for the overbearing speed enforcement in neighboring states like Ohio and Maryland.

I strongly endorse anything that will slow people down in residential areas and congested commercial zones.

WAY too many drivers view speed limits as something they have the option to blow off whenever they please, regardless of the danger they present to others -- including children, walkers and cyclists -- and regardless of their severe negative impact on the quality of life of local taxpayers.

I say stick it to 'em. All they have to do is slow down and drive like normal people instead of arrogant, self-centered jerks.
