“If you want to run a service like that you have to design the system up front to accommodate it,” says Richard Krisak, MARTA’s chief operating officer. “This system never envisioned having any kind of express trains, or third tracks or fourth tracks to run on. If you look at the systems that run those kinds of express services — like the Broad Street subway in Philadelphia, parts of New York City — they were designed to do that (with extra tracks).”
I wish, someone had thought of that back in the day. Hopefully, the new lines can have express section built with their section.

Really? .... Really?

People, come on. (not directed at you, OP) You think it is reasonable to have an express track from Lindbergh to the Airport? Of all the things we could spend what little money MARTA gets for infrastructure on... So selfish.

Yet they planned for Green Line express service as part of I-20 east. I had an email out to them on that but no response as of yet.

Agreed. There's way better things that money could be spent on and the trains will already get you there faster and cheaper than driving. If anything, use the money to increase the frequency and reach of the system.

Got to move those Alpharetta Unicorns to the airport ASAP. Can't have them mixing with us millennials.

Paying for an express train would be really stupid imo

If they could figure out how to make it work, expressing trains from North Springs to at least Lindbergh wouldn't be a bad idea once the red line extension comes online. Missing Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Medical Center and Buckhead would provide a decent improvement and separate out the traffic a bit. So basically there would be two Red Line services, one all-stops train, and one that skips a number of stations. Express service can work on two-tracks, there are existing lines with such service, basically the key is to launch the express just a few minutes ahead of the local, for MARTA that'd be something like three minutes.

But really to have express service on top of two existing lines (like Red/Gold/Express and Blue/Green/Express as opposed to just making one line an express service like the proposed I-20 East plan) MARTA will need a signaling overhaul to implement the CBTC that NYC is installing on its L and 7 trains, that exists on Vancouver's Skytrain, or the Docklands Light Railway.

Even CTA ended their skip-stop service.

Seriously, what's the point? Without traffic the train is the same speed as driving from the airport to North Springs (well, if you're driving responsibly). With traffic it's faster. Of all the things we need to spend transit money on, that ain't one.

When I was in New York I road the E Train a lot which is an express line from Jamaica Queens to Manhattan about 20 stations and I can tell you it was no faster than Marta from the airport to North springs which is about the same Distance so to me what Marta has is like express it takes 45 minutes to travel from airport to north springs in New York it took an hour to travel the same Distance on express now on the weekends the E Train is not express and stops at every station on that line and takes over and hour and half to travel we talking 32 station's the Marta red line has 19 stations think about it
